Abstract
Description
CADRANS SOLAIRES A HEURE LEGALE PANORAMIQUES
The present invention relates to sundial shapes having two essential characteristics
10) allowing the legal time to be read directly,
2 ") from sunrise to sunset.
This second characteristic, justifying the qualifier "panoramic", involves placing the product in a place where the maximum amount of sky is clear (plain, panorama ...) so that no obstacle (tree, house ...) hides the sun regardless of its place in the sky.
State of the prior art
Classic sundials indicate local time. They have a decorative role more than a functional one; indeed to find the difference D between the legal time and the local time, it is necessary to know
1 ") the difference D1 between the average legal time and the local time of the original iridian (1 hour in winter, 2 hours in summer)
2 ") insert D2 corresponding to the longitude of the place, eg Besançon 6" east, D2: 6 x 4 min = 24 min ahead of the time of the original meridian
3) the difference D3 provided by the curve of "the equation of time (due to the elliptical and non-circular trajectory of the earth around the sun) variable throughout the year between - 14 min and + 16 min.
D = D1 + D2 + D3. D = D1 + D2 + D3.
Because of this complexity, nobody pretends, in practice, to use the sun to get the time, even an approximate one.
Par exemple à Besançon, l'ecart D peut varier entre 20 mn (1 h 24 mn - 16 mn) le 4 novembre et 1 h 42 mn (2 h - 24 mn + 6 mn) le 26 juillet. For example in Besançon, the difference D can vary between 20 min (1 h 24 min - 16 min) on November 4 and 1 h 42 min (2 h - 24 min + 6 min) on July 26.
Only rare specialists and passionate astronomers have access.
On the other hand, the most usual classic sundials, drawn on the vertical plane of house facades, work only part of the sunny day: either the middle, or the beginning, or the end, depending on the orientation of the facade.
3 - les cadrans "hémisphériques" ou "sphères armillaires" (appellations d'ailleurs impropres car il s'agit de surfaces cylindriques et non spheriques ; "équatorial cylindrique" serait plus approprié).Three less common versions of known sundials can operate throughout the day, so be said to be panoramic:
1 - the horizontal dials,
2 - the equatorial sundials,
3 - "hemispherical" or "armillary spheres" dials (moreover improper names because they are cylindrical and not spherical surfaces; "cylindrical equatorial" would be more appropriate).
But for the first two, the shadow of style grows endlessly, for one at sunrise and sunset, for the other at the equinoxes: they would not lend themselves to a direct reading of the legal time by the transformation which will be discussed below.
On the other hand the third sty version ready, we will see it.
Exhibition of the invention
A - The first characteristic of the product: direct reading of the legal time, is achievable for the most general cases, even non-panoramic, on any surface lit by the sun a few hours during the day.
The hour lines of such a product are simply the place, throughout the year at the same legal time of each day, of the shade cast by the sun on any surface, of the tip of a style any. For each hour, this place draws a kind of 8, which corresponds to the meridian of average time of astronomers, translation of "ltéquation du temps".
The shadow projection surface can be a horizontal, incline or vertical plane, and in the latter case: due south, due east or due west; "declining east" or "declining west".
The projection surface can also be a regular cylinder, sphere ... curve; or irregnliere: left, hilly, or even with "folds".
The style can be a simple rod ending in a point, roughly perpendicular to the surface, but also any other shape, which has a point or a clearly identifiable point, fixed relative to the projection surface.
The surface and the style once decided, the hour lines can therefore be effectively drawn point by point, by placing a point on the shadow of the tip of the style at each hour of each sunny day of a full year; then joining the points with a solid line.
To read the time in the following years, an ambiguity would remain between the left and right branches of the 8, if at least two different colors could not distinguish them; the clarity of reading is total by taking four colors, one per Season. For example: green spring, red summer, brown autumn, blue winter: these colors evoke their respective seasons quite well and are of equivalent contrast on a light background. The color changes are made at the solstices (top and bottom ends of the 8) and the equinoxes (half of the course of the 8). The dates of the equinoxes: end of March and end of September, are practically those of the time changes, summer and winter, in France today. The line of equinox (which is always a straight line on a map) is therefore also the time change line: from this, the hours are dialed between the top and bottom of the 8 (fig. 1). This incorporates the difference D1. If the time change were removed, the numbering of the hours would simply be the same at the top and bottom of the 8.
When the projection surfaces are relatively simple (planes, cylinder ...) these hour lines in 8 can be found by calculation, by means of the following systematic transformation.
The straight time lines of conventional sundials, at local time, calculated according to the latitude of the place, are drawn, and then shifted taking into account the longitude of the place (integration of insert D2), then each time line shifts is deformed by drawing around it the meridian of mean time in 8 give by the astronomical tables (integration of D3).
This transformation is known to astronomers, so is not claimed here as an invention; but it is very rarely applied and practically unknown to the public, no doubt because of its slowness of realization, both point by point and by calculation. In fact, barring exceptions, all the curves in 8 must be completely redrawn each time we change places, covering 40 km around for an accuracy of 2 minutes of time. The precision is limited by the angular diameter of the solar disc which is half a degree. 1 degree of longitude (75 km in France) corresponds to 4 minutes of time. The theoretical precision of a sundial is therefore 2 minutes time; but a variation of a minute is very discernible.
Currently its rapid execution by calculation, on demand, is possible by means of CAD (drawing assisted by computer), therefore marketable.
B - The second characteristic of the product: panoramic, is produced by suitable forms of the style projection surface.
Various forms are possible; they have in common the property of collecting at a short distance the shadow of the tip of the style in all positions of the sun.
In all cases it is a hollow or concave shape, in a bowl, limited by a horizontal plane passing through the tip of the style.
Any form of this kind, equipped with its style, can provide a sundial at panoramic legal time, by drawing hourly lines point by point throughout the year, as in the general case.
However, marketing the product requires simple geometric shapes that lend themselves to calculation.
vertical plein ouest : Fig. 2.These bowls can be made up of several projection planes. The search for simplicity of calculation and execution leads to choosing remarkable orientations of these plans, for example
- 4 shots: horizontal, vertical facing south, vertical facing east,
vertical due west: Fig. 2.
- 3 plans : vertical sud, vertical est, vertical ouest : Fig. - 3 shots: vertical south, vertical east, vertical west: Fig.
3 (et 9). 3 (and 9).
- 3 plans : horizontal, vertical est, vertical ouest : Fig. 4
(et 10).- 3 shots: horizontal, vertical east, vertical west: Fig. 4
(and 10).
- 3 plans : polaire (plan incliné plein sud, parallèle à la ligne
des pôles), vertical est, vertical ouest : Fig. 5 (et 11).- 3 planes: polar (inclined plane due south, parallel to the line
poles), east vertical, west vertical: Fig. 5 (and 11).
- 2 plans : vertical declinant est, vertical déclinant ouest
Fig. 6 (et 12).- 2 shots: vertical declining east, vertical declining west
Fig. 6 (and 12).
- cylindre polaire (ou equatorial cylindrique) : Fig. 7 (et 13).These bowls can also be made up of a single cylindrical projection surface, for example
- polar cylinder (or cylindrical equatorial): Fig. 7 (and 13).
In this remarkably simple particular case, all 8 are equal and equidistant (Fig. 1); by changing longitude it is enough to translate the whole drawing once and for all.
This form: polar cylinder limited by a horizontal plane passing through the tip of the style, joins that which is the subject of a previous patent (French patent no. 87 10188). 8, only provides the legal time reading indirectly, at the cost of scholarly and daily handling.
- Cylindre vertical - Fig. 8 (et 14). - Vertical cylinder - Fig. 8 (and 14).
All the examples cited were actually calculated and produced in the form of operational portable prototypes for Besançon.
But they are not the only ones possible. We can conceive different forms or orientations, possibly more complicated, which will also meet the definition and the use in question.
Note that the hollow bowl shape required meets that of the "scaphes" of antiquity.
C - A third characteristic is optional but adds a more important one: it is the constitution of the projection surfaces in translucent material. The shadow of the style is then visible not only on the front projection side, but also on the rear side (sheet 4/4): the field of vision of the time is much larger than when the material is opaque (Fig 2).
D - A sundial with a panoramic legal time of small dimensions (portable), having a vertical plane due east (and due west) can be used as a precision compass (in the region for which it is built) provided that you have a level, a watch and ... the sun.
It is placed on a horizontal plane thanks to the level; it is oriented so that it marks the time of the watch (preferably an entire hour), the vertical plane is (or west), being parallel to the meridian plane containing the North-South geographic axis, materialize this direction to within 0.5.
This maneuver is also that of the final implementation of the product in a chosen place.
E - This product can be conceived of all dimensions, from the portable being able to be used as compass, while passing by a medium dimension: model for public or private garden, until "monumental" visible from very far.
It is helpful, for the interpolation of non-whole hours, to insert, between the 8 schedules, the 8 of the half-hours (light dotted for example to maintain clarity of reading). One can add to it transverse lines of interesting dates, in addition to the lines of the dates of solstice and equinox (Fig. 1). These dates could also appear along one of the 8 if it is large enough to support writing overloads.
REMARQUE
The prototype photographs show the name "soleilheur" which is a registered trademark (June 28, 1991) designating the expression "sundial with direct reading of the legal time" and giving the color code by season.
Un "soleilheur" n'est pas nécessairement panoramique. A "soleilheur" is not necessarily panoramic.
