Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a floating cover for a cylindrical tank of large diameter, in particular for a tank containing liquid hydrocarbons.
When storing volatile liquids, and especially hydrocarbons, an important problem is to avoid the loss of liquid by evaporation. To this end, several solutions have been proposed, consisting in installing in the tank containing the liquid, a cover capable of floating on the surface of the liquid. In this type of installation, the cover rests on feet when the liquid level is below a certain threshold; on the other hand, it floats on the surface of the liquid when the tank is sufficiently filled. Thus, for example, covers are known which consist essentially of an aluminum plate provided with floats. There are also known covers made up of a set of elements comprising a rigid foam of low density inserted between aluminum plates and assembled by means of aluminum profiles. Such covers nevertheless have certain drawbacks. Indeed, as they are essentially made of aluminum or they include many aluminum parts, they risk being destroyed, or at least considerably deformed in the event of fire, by melting aluminum. In addition, the assembly by profiles does not allow a perfect seal; capillary losses may occur.
The present invention aims to provide a new floating cover, inert vis-à-vis hydrocarbons and fire resistant.
The floating cover according to the invention, intended to cover a tank containing a liquid, is characterized in that it consists essentially of a rigid foam of low density with closed cells forming a plate whose dimensions correspond to the section of the tank .
The rigid closed cell foam is preferably a foam having a three-dimensional network structure which gives it high dimensional stability. When the cover is intended to cover tanks containing flammable liquids, a foam preferably having a fire classification M1 is chosen. As an example of foam, mention may be made of polyurethane foams, preferably those whose density is less than 55.
Advantageously, the cover is composed of several elementary plates assembled together on the site, during the installation of the cover in the tank.
This variant is particularly advantageous when the diameter of the cover is large and / or when it is a question of equipping a pre-existing tank which has a fixed roof. In this case, the central part of the cover consists of identical elementary plates assembled to each other, and the peripheral part consists of elementary plates whose dimensions are adjusted to the perimeter of the tank. Each of the elementary plates constituting the central part comprises means making it possible to assemble it to the adjoining elementary plates. A particularly advantageous embodiment consists in providing two of the lateral faces with an elementary plate of a relief and the two other faces of the complementary relief. The lateral faces of a peripheral plate which are used for assembly are also provided with either protruding relief, or relief in relief, along the contiguous elementary plate.
A layer of adhesive material can be inserted between two contiguous plates during their assembly, so as to reinforce the cohesion of the cover. The adhesive is chosen so that it is compatible with the foam and inert with respect to the liquid contained in the tank.
The cover according to the invention is provided with an antistatic connection which has the role of removing static electricity.
When the cover is made up of several elementary plates, an antistatic element is advantageously inserted between two contiguous elementary plates during assembly of the cover. This element can be an antistatic braid. Alternatively, a bare copper wire can be inserted into the groove formed by the recessed relief existing on at least one of the side faces of a plate. This wire provides the connection between all the plates constituting the cover. The connection between the network thus created and the tank can be achieved by means of a stainless steel cable.
The present invention will be described in more detail using the attached figures.

FIG. 6 represents a cover according to the invention, seen in section.
FIG. 1 represents a cover 1 according to the invention made up of several elementary plates. The plates consist of a rigid foam. The central part is formed of elementary plates 2 all similar. The peripheral part is formed of elementary plates 3, 3 ', 3 ", 3"', etc., having various shapes so as to adapt on the one hand to the adjoining plates, and on the other hand to the wall of the tank.
In the embodiment shown, the different plates 2 and 3, 3 ', etc., are assembled by forming chevrons. This embodiment, although not essential, is however preferred because it improves the strength of the cover. FIG. 2 represents a plate 2 seen in perspective. This plate 2 has a rectangular shape and has an upper face 4 and a lower face 4 '. Figure 3 shows the same plate seen from above. On two adjacent side faces 5 and 6, the elementary plate 2 has a projecting part 9. The other two contiguous faces 7 and 8 have recessed parts having a shape complementary to the projecting parts 9 of the side faces 5 and 6. These projections and these recesses make it possible to assemble the plates 2 together. Of course, the plates 3, 3 ′, etc., comprise, on their lateral faces which will be in contact with the lateral faces of elementary plates 2 or of elementary plates 3, 3 ', etc, the same projecting or recessed parts, depending on their location. In order to improve the strength of the cover, a layer of adhesive is applied to the side faces of the different facing plates 2 or 3, before their assembly.
In a particularly preferred variant, shown in FIG. 6, the cover 1 is encircled by a frame (10) having a U-shaped section, so as to give the cover good mechanical strength in the zone of contact with the wall of the tank. The frame is constituted for example by galvanized sheet. The seal between the cover 1 and the wall of the tank 11 is produced by means of a flexible seal 12 fixed on the circle. This can be constituted for example by a flexible foam enclosed in a rubber envelope resistant to hydrocarbons.
It is advantageous to coat the underside of the plates 2 or 3, 3 ', etc. with a layer of coating to block the cells which are on this underside and which are open because the foam element is cut from a larger piece. This prevents absorption of the liquid in this lower layer of the cover. This coating layer is useful both for a cover formed by a single sheet of foam, and for covers made up of several elementary sheets of foam assembled. As a coating, for example, an epoxy paint or a polyester coating can be used.
When the cover of the present invention is intended to equip a tank containing hydrocarbons, use is advantageously made of a foam having a fire classification of the M1 type. As an example of such a foam, mention may be made, for example, of the foam sold under the brand KLEGECELL by the company Polymex, which is also inert with respect to hydrocarbons. A suitable glue is then HRC 3176 glue, sold by the company Technibat.
Of course, the cover of the present invention is provided with all the parts and accessories known elsewhere, which are necessary for its installation and its use in tanks.
Thus, the cover of the present invention makes it possible to considerably reduce the losses of liquid by evaporation.
In addition, it constitutes excellent thermal insulation.
