Abstract

The invention relates to a suspension for a vehicle providing horizontal and vertical filtration of the impacts (shocks) coming from the road; the suspension is split into two parts: a part on the chassis side, providing vertical suspension with its "wheel carrier" 40, a part on the wheel side made up of the non-suspended masses with its bearing housing 5: between the two are placed a set of five connecting rods 10, 11, 20, 30, 31 making it possible to produce horizontal and vertical suspension, the stiffness of which can be varied as a function of the excursion, by means of a pendular suspension by virtue of two vertical connecting rods 30 and 31; limit stops situated on the housing 5 and the wheel carrier 40 limit the excursions of this two-directional suspension.

Description

The present invention relates to a bidirectional suspension for vehicles, making it possible to considerably improve the comfort of suspension, while making it possible to increase the stiffness of the vertical suspension. It achieves the combination of a horizontal suspension with a usually known vertical suspension; the system applies to vehicles fitted with any number of axles: motor or non-motor, such as: automobile, truck, trailer, caravan, public works machine, racing car, two-wheeled vehicle, etc.

Current suspensions have insufficient horizontal amplitude of the wheel, which is insufficient to effectively protect vehicles when crossing large obstacles at high speed. This movement is mostly provided by the elasticity of the various suspension elements. , and in particular by the elastic joints. The proposed system makes it possible to increase the longitudinal travel during the passage of the wheel over the obstacle and therefore to reduce the shocks transmitted to the vehicle both horizontally and vertically. Existing front or rear running gear are consist of 2 parts:
1) An "unsprung" part consisting of the wheel, the hub, the braking system, the bearings and their casing fixed on a wheel carrier (also called spindle carrier) by means of a bearing.

2) A part called "the suspension which makes it possible to connect the wheel carrier to the chassis of the vehicle. This part consists of a known baleen, by an articulated or not assembly, consisting of arms and links and an elastic element, (spring ) absorbing the energy developed during vertical impacts
The present invention is characterized by the creation of an additional function which we call "horizontal suspension" and independently of the vertical suspension previously mentioned. We can in the same way make a suspension which only has the "horizontal suspension" function, because the two functions are carried out separately. We will distinguish in the following text: a part that we will call A consisting of the unsprung elements listed above
..and a part that we will call B consisting of the elements of the known vertical suspension, comprising the elements of the suspension itself: arm, spring and the wheelbarrow (also called portefusée) but without the bearing box, this one being incorporated to part A
The "horizontal suspension" combined or not, with the vertical suspension, constitutes the object of the invention; The horizontal suspension is of the pendulum type produced by two vertical links, ensuring a horizontal and vertical clearance of the part A. the guidance is ensured by 3 horizontal links between A and B: 2 links located at the bottom and 1 link at the part high; But we can reverse this assembly and even use 2 high links and 2 low links each pair of rod having a compatible clearance avoiding the blocking of the system
.The travel of the vertical links can be limited by stops located between the wheel carrier and the bearing housing in its. new definition
The description of the invention can be followed in the attached figures.
FIG. 1 represents an adaptation on a front axle of the so-called "Mac Pherson" type
Figure 2 shows the position of the end stops located between the hub and the wheel carrier
Figure 3 is a variant of the positioning of the stops.

Figure 4 is a variant of this combined suspension: the 5 rods are replaced by 2 recessed rods.

FIG. 5 represents the stops in the case of FIG. 4
This bidirectional suspension device can be applied to any known suspension, such as: rigid axle, trailing arms swing arms with or without driving axle ...

We will describe the structure of the invention by means of Figure 1
The drawing represents a front train of Mac Pherson; The wheel carrier (portefusée) is different from the classic wheel carrier: it is divided into 2 parts. The bearing housing part is located in part A, which includes: the wheel 4, the hub 3, the disc 2 part of the transmission 1, and the part of the wheel carrier 5 serving as a bearing housing and as a point of attachment to the 5 connecting rods by means of the ball joints: 28 and 29, 35, 36 and 37. There are 5 links: 30 and 31, 20, 10 and 11 which ensure the connection of 5 with the other part of the wheel carrier 40, i.e. the connection between A and B. On the wheel carrier are fixed the usual elements of MacPherson suspensions: the lower arm 41 with its ball joint 47, the shock absorber 45, the spring 46, and the attachment to the chassis 48. The 3 horizontal rods guide the wheel and participate in the horizontal forces; the 2 vertical rods transmit the suspension forces. We can, for whatever reason: ease of assembly, resistance .. have two rods of the same kind such as 20; The articulations 34 and 35 on the one hand, and 36/37 and 38/39 on the other hand are systems which must also operate without play and without significant friction; they can be constituted by ball joints like suspension ball joint or any other system; The vertical links 30 and 31 transmit the weight of the vehicle and their joints consist of ball joints or joints with large angular movement, e.g. sliding joints.

The operation will be described with the figure Fig.l: The movement of the assembly A, which is that of the wheel, is a translation according to an arc of circle whose radius is equal to that of the vertical rods. Part A constitutes the mass of a pendulum oscillating on the 2 rods 30 and 31. The assembly, when the wheel is subjected to a horizontal shock, allows displacement with great ease in the horizontal direction when the 2 rods 30 and 31 are close to the vertical position, thus providing a great smoothness of rolling and on the other hand a very great stiffness when the links 30 and 31 are close to the horizontal position; When braking or accelerating, the vertical links tilt to absorb the forces and the return to the vertical position is always ensured: the braking force is less than or at most equal to the weight supported by the wheel
The same reasoning is applicable with regard to the turning force: on the other hand the horizontal displacement is the same for the horizontal rods and for the vertical rods; the vertical force being greater than the horizontal transverse force, the system returns to its equilibrium position; Les.biellettes can be of different lengths: to avoid too large track variations during horizontal deflections, one can have an upper link 20 shorter than the lower links 10 and 11. By tilting the 2 horizontal links 10 and 11 one with respect to the other, it is possible to obtain variations in the pinching of the wheel in the direction that is desired during the horizontal movement. In the same way, the vertical rods 30 and 31 can be inclined relative to the other to obtain a pendulum on a length of fictitious rod of length different from that of the real rods. Finally in the case where the 2 horizontal lower rods are parallel and of the same length, one can use 2 horizontal rods superior of the same length also
Finally to ensure the steering of the wheels, the wheel carrier 40 remains fixed, and the bearing carrier 5 of part A rotates in front of the element B under the action of the direction acting on the steering ball joint, fixed on the wheel carrier 40 The wheel carrier 40 rotates the assembly A, via the 5 links
To avoid vertical rods sticking out during travel, the horizontal position
provision is made for extreme travel, to have end-of-travel stops between the part 5 and the part 40, as shown in FIG. 2 and Fiq. 3 by way of example
Fig. 2 shows a modification of parts 5 and 40: 2 appendices 48 out of 5 and 49 out of 40 serve as end of travel stops. An elastic element 71 located between the 2 parts absorbs the shock. FIG. 3 represents an assembly where the link 20 is made by an arm surrounding the shock absorber 45; The stroke limitation is done when the arm comes to bear on the body of the shock absorber 45 by the stop 70.

........ We can use a simplified assembly if the space allows, consisting of two vertical rods embedded at each end on 2 bearings (tapered for example), as shown in Figure 4 and 5: the 2 vertical rods 30/31 are fitted at each end with tapered bearings 50/51/52/53 ensuring a fitting in the manner of a wheel mounting. Parts 5 and 40 have appendices 55 and 56 which make it possible to limit the upward movement of the rods 30 and 31; a stop 72 made of elastic material is disposed between the 2 parts to allow a gradual stop. This mounting with recessed joints eliminates the horizontal link system.

The industrial application consists in making a bearing box 5 allowing 5 rods to be fixed thereon, which is possible with a forged and machined part; But this part can be made of 2 parts: a cylindrical case on the one hand, on which one fixes a part carrying rods, carrying the fixing points of these
.The wheel carrier 40 can also be made in one or 2 parts. The set is "interchangeable" with an existing train
