Abstract
Description
The present process consists in hydrophilizing the sponges in polyurethane foam.
Sponges made of this material (used, for example, by house painters) do not soak spontaneously in contact with water; they must be kneaded while keeping them submerged. The consequences are: long and unpleasant work, the appearance of a viscous foam, a limited "water intake" and an unsatisfactory result.
After application of the process, the sponge is flexible and handy. In wet conditions, immersion and absorption of water are immediate, there is no foaming effect, the material has lost its initial gloss in favor of a matt appearance with a soft touch. The use becomes quick, easy and efficient.
The process involves treating the material in an alkaline solution.
The duration of the treatment depends on the concentration of the solution, on the nature of the alkaline agents, and on the temperature of the reaction medium; it can be of the order of 1 to 48 hours, by way of indication.
The alkaline agent can be sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonia, methyl-ethanol-amine or any other strong base, alone or in combination.
The treatment can be done both on the material in the semi-finished state and on the worked product (sponge).
It can be done by immersion (with or without agitation) or by watering.
