Abstract

The invention relates to the special use of a polymer foam inside a hermetic container filled by the forced vacuum technique in order to hold, as micro-bubbles, the gas released by a liquid during its possible degradation. Among the most advantageous applications may be mentioned the use of a container made of thin transparent plastic material containing a liquid emitting luminescence and releasing a gas during its luminescence phase. This container may be used as a communication surface by the affixing of silk-screening or of a negative film on a transparent face.

Description

The present utility relates to the particular use of a polymer foam, of cellular structure, the volume of the cells of which relative to the volume of the polymer is between 50% and 90%. (This ratio is commonly expressed in density, that is to say, in the case which interests us, a density between 10% and 50%) in a hermetically closed container and containing a liquid which, under the effect of aging, agitation or a chemical reaction leading to its degradation, generates a gaseous evolution.

- Up to now, the use of such foams is commonly applied in industry, as insulation or cushioning materials, for packaging, upholstery for the furniture industry, etc. use of these foams inside a container like a tank for example, is limited to compensating for the sudden imbalance of the liquid masses contained in a container during sudden movements of said container: for example, in mechanical sports, the sports federations recommend the use of these polymers inside the fuel tanks, so as to slow down the sudden change in distribution of the masses during a sudden change in attitude,
On the other hand, in case of perforation of the container, the presence of these polymers makes it possible to considerably slow down the flow of liquidSontenu, which can be dangerous.

- It can be seen that, in the case of an airtight container which can deform if the internal pressure is higher, its deformation resistance, a container filled to the maximum with a liquid which, either by inherent degradation its chemical instability, or degradation caused by l addition of another chemical compound, generates a gas, a deformation of the container is created implying on the one hand, visually, the drop in the level of the liquid and, on the other hand, the formation of a gas pocket at the above the liquid,
In certain cases of chemical reactions, the volume of gas generated may be such that it is necessary to use for the structure of the container a material sufficiently deformable so that the internal pressure generated by the evolution of gas does not cause the container to burst, which for various reasons, must have thin plastic walls.

The commercial and technical requirements of certain finished products cannot withstand these drawbacks.

The problem encountered is threefold
on the one hand, the visible drop in the level of the liquid in a container, at least part of which is transparent,
on the other hand, the creation of a gas pocket above the liquid,
and, again, the significant deformation in certain cases which can hinder the aesthetics of the product.

The solution to these problems is as follows
A polymer foam with a honeycomb structure is incorporated into the container, the density of which is between 10 and 50%, which is associated with filling by the high vacuum of the liquid in said container.

The polymer foam occupies the entire interior volume of the container.

The observations obtained are as follows - During filling and only under a high vacuum (-1 bar)
the foam cells completely empty of air
they contain; these cavities are perfectly
filled with the liquid used, - During natural or induced degradation of the liquid, the
gas evolution is divided into tiny gas bubbles
trapped in the multiple cells of the foam, which,
moreover, by compressing, prevents in a certain
limits the deformation of the walls of the container.

The resulting result is as follows - There is no visible drop in the level of the liquid - there is no formation of a gas pocket, but a
multitude of uniformly distributed micro-bubbles
in the foam, which are almost invisible to the eye
naked, especially if a transparent part of the container
a matt appearance.

-On the other hand, the container which, for various reasons,
must have thin walls, almost does not deform.

- This utility is particularly interesting in the
if this liquid emits luminescence, because the ratio
Amount of light / Emission area, is
preserved throughout the luminescent reaction phase.
