Abstract

Two light emitting diodes (2) (3) and two protecting resistors (8) (9) are provided. The cathode of one diode is connected to the negative pole of the vehicle battery using a clip-on connection (5) while the anode of the second diode (3) is connected to the positive pole of the same battery with a similar clip on connection (6). The remaining terminals of each diode are connected to an external probe (4) via the protecting resistors. Both diodes come on when initial connection is made to the vehicle battery thus confirming correct connection. When the external probe is applied to a test point on the vehicle wiring only one of the diodes lights thus indicating the polarity. ADVANTAGE - Tester uses vehicle battery, minimises changes in connections when testing in different situations, and can detect continuous or intermittent potentials.

Description

The invention relates to an apparatus for monitoring the presence and polarity of an electric voltage: continuous or discontinuous. at a point on an electrical circuit, in particular for testing the circuits of a motor vehicle.

Apparatuses of this type generally comprise a case containing the control circuit and at least one indicator light, such as a neon lamp or a light-emitting diode, a connecting conductor at a reference voltage and a conductive tip or pad allowing contact with the point to be controlled of an electrious circuit. Such instruments are used, for example, in the automotive industry to verify the correct connection of electrical circuits.

An apparatus of this type is known which makes it possible to test the polarity or the ph2se of a voltage in which the indication is supplied by two light-emitting diodes mounted in parallel and in opposite direction to each other and which uses as reference voltage a alternative tensio.Ce = i is a drawback for the use mentioned above because it requires the installation of a special power supply on the workstation so oue we already have, in this place a power source keep on going. the vehicle battery in this case, Dn connalt propping devices capable of using as reference voltage a DC voltage but these can only be connected to one of the poles of the source, in the hold only if you want test a circuit point to be connected to earth, you must connect the control conductor to the positive pole and vice versa. This causes frequent changes of connection and risk of error because there is no self-checking or system in the event of faulty connection of the reference circuit.

These problems are solved by a control device yes, comprising a tester contact capable of being connected to the point to be checked, connected in series with an electrical circuit comprising two light-emitting diodes mounted in opposite directions to one another. According to the invention, the cathode of one of the diodes is connected to the negative pole of a direct current source by means of a conductor provided with a removable connection means, while a second conductor provided with a same connecting means ensures the connection of the anode of the second diode to the positive pole of said source. The opposite electrode of each of the diodes is then connected to a terminal of a resistor, the other terminal of which is connected to a common junction point to which the test contact is also electrically connected.

Preferably the diodes are of different colors.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear on reading the description which follows with reference to the appended figure which represents a diagram of an apparatus according to the invention, given by way of example.

A box 1 which is given a compact and easily graspable shape contains an electrical circuit comprising two light-emitting diodes 2 and z arranged in a visible manner from the outside of the bolier. A test contact 4 constituted, for example. by a point made of conductive material, protrudes from the case 1. The latter still carries two conductive cables 5 and 6, one end of which is provided with a removable connection means (not shown) with the terminals of a source of continuous quarantine 7, for example a motor vehicle battery. The connection means can be so-called "crocodile" clips of different colors, for example in accordance with international standardization, green for the one which must be connected to the negative pole of the battery and red for the one which must be connected to the positive pole, so as to avoid connection errors - by inversion.

The cathode of the diode 2 is connected to the negative pole of the battery 7, via the conductor 5, while the conductor 6 connects the anode of the diode 3 to the positive pole of the said battery. The opposite electrode of each of the diodes is connected to a terminal of a resistor, respectively 8 and 9, the other terminal of which is connected to a common junction point. The resistors e and 9 which protect the ci odes against overvoltages have the same ohmic value in the measurement od the diodes 2 and 3 have the same characteristics. The test contact 4 is also electrically connected to the junction point A. Pre + erence, diode 2 connected to the negative pole of battery 7 will be red in color and diode 3, connected to the positive pole will be green.

The device operates as follows. when the conductors 5 and 6 are connected to the appropriate terminals of the battery 7, if the connection is correct the two diodes light up thus ensuring a positive self-checking of the operation of the device. When the contact this test 4 is applied to a circuit point whose polarity is negative, a current flows in the branch 11 of the circuit comprising the green diode o which remains lit then oue the red diode 2 connected to the negative pole of the source power turns off. Conversely, if the test contact 4 touches a point of positive polarity, the current flows in branch 10 of the circuit, the red diode 2 remains lit while the green diode v goes out. The operator will thus know particularly clear and without intermediate manipulation what is the polarity of each point of the circuit tested.

In the case where the circuit to be controlled delivers a discontinuous electrical signal, as for example, in a motor vehicle, the ignition or injection control signal, when the signal is present at the point to be tested, only remains lit the diode corresponding to the polarity thereof. During the period corresponding to the absence of the signal, the two diodes are lit, so that a repetition of these two states makes appear a continuous lighting of the diode corresponding to the polarity of the tested signal, while - the other flashes indicating the discontinuous dimension of the voltage to be checked.

A simple and safe device is thus obtained, leaving the user great freedom. movement and eliminate the risk of error inherent in previous devices.
