Abstract

The insulating material comprises an insulating filler and a binder, the insulating filler being in the form of a homogeneous unstratified mixture of various particles of which at least 20 % consist of clay of montmorillonite, illite or halloysite type. A passive insulating material can be added to the insulating filler and the binder employed is inorganic or organic in nature. The invention is particularly intended for the thermal protection of pyrotechnic equipment subjected to a severe environment.

Description

There is currently an acute demand, but not satisfied by the current market, for thermal protection for pyrothecnic materials subjected to a severe environment. This protection must be able to withstand high temperatures, above 8000C on the hot face for periods longer than twenty minutes, while maintaining temperatures on the cold face below 1500C for the entire duration of exposure. To fill this void, we have developed an insulator with the following characteristics.

L scliptí,: IxoLre insulator is based on a mineral filler bound by organic elastomeric resins, or by a common mineral binder with hydraulic setting. This product is stable over time and is not subject to harmful or corrosive fumes during the storage period or during a thermal attack. Our product is intended to be used either as tamping between two rigid walls, or in mass polymerized.

Our product is a composite, involving simultaneously and / or successively active phenomena such as vaporization, or passive phenomena such as thermal resistivity. The active parts consist of clays in which thermal aggression triggers very endothermic dehydration reactions. passive are alumina oxides and carbon catalysts, as well as some forms of silica
Our product responds to market demands by its thermal performance and is in the region of 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on its thickness with a maximum of 35mm.
In the insulator according to the invention, the insulating filler is in the form of a homogeneous non-layered mixture of various particles, at least 20% of which consist of clay of the Montmorillonite (Bentonite, Beidellite or Nontronite) or Illite type. or
Halloysite. The water naturally bound in these materials is only very loose; it penetrates their networks in an amount corresponding to the vapor pressure of water in the ambient medium, and can be removed from the network without destroying it. The phenomenon is reversible, rehydration can be natural or artificial.

It is possible to add to the load a passive insulator of the expanded clay type for at least 15% of said load,
It is also possible to add to the load a passive insulator of the micronized silica type for at least 5% of said load.

It is also possible to add to the load a passive insulator of the aluminum oxide type for at least 5% of said load.

The binder can be either mineral in nature with hydraulic setting (with the addition of a blowing agent to cancel shrinkage), incorporated for at least 10 46 of the filler or of organic and polymerizable nature. being incorporated with a content of at least 10% of the said charge.

The bonding of the filler can be carried out by an inorganic binder obtained by the surface reaction between a talc and a sodium silicate in solution in water; this binder being used at least 10 46 of said load.

Carbon particles can be incorporated into at least 5% of the said charge, with the aim of causing the water released by the active insulator to act on it; the reaction obtained, very endothermic, is the manufacture of gas with water, well known to chemists and physicists0 I1 it is specified that the carbonaceous particles must be incorporated into the insulating mass and distributed in it avoiding any concentration of strata .

Les valeurs et paramètres des phénomènes de vaporisation sont donnés par le diagramme de Mollier The values and parameters of the vaporization phenomena are given by the Mollier diagram
