Abstract

The invention relates to an irradiation station containing radioactive sources, making it possible to process, at low cost, a high output of products, whatever their nature or their loose bulk or packaged form. The plant comprises a radiation-absorbing protective enclosure, in the middle of which a line of great length, carrying radioactive sources, is deployed. The products to be processed travel helically around the active line. The active line comprises a certain number of empty carriage units enabling the irradiation power to be adjusted to a substantially constant value; moreover its design, allowing it to be fitted into a compact and small volume, permits the use of transport containers of small size. The products to be processed travel in chutes which can be closed and which allow them to be processed under vacuum or under a controlled atmosphere. The plant can be designed in modular form so as to be capable of being moved to a number of user sites.
