Abstract

Method for connecting conductors 1, in the form of a ribbon cable 2, to electrical contacts 3 housed in a casing 4, consisting, in a first phase, in engaging the contacts 3 partially in the casing 4, a portion 3a of the said contacts extending beyond the corresponding face 5 of the casing, in a second phase, in connecting, by any known means, the stripped ends of the conductors 1 of the ribbon cable 2 to the contacts 3, in a third phase, in pushing the assembly (ribbon cable and contacts) back into the casing 4 in order to cause the contacts 3 to penetrate completely and the ribbon cable 2 to penetrate partially therein and, finally, in a fourth phase, in providing a seal between the casing and the ribbon.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for connecting the stripped end of a cable to a metal contact held in a case forming one of the two parts of a connector.

The invention relates, more particularly, to the simultaneous connection of conductive cables arranged in a sheet.

Experience has shown that it was always very difficult to automate the operation of connecting a plurality of conductive cables to contacts maintained in an insulating housing and that it was also difficult to ensure a good seal at the level of the insulated cable penetration point in the housing.

a) à engager partiellement les contacts métalliques dans le boîtier, une partie desdits contacts s'étendant au-delà de la face correspondante dudit boîtier;
c) à repousser l'ensemble pour faire pénétrer complètement les contacts ainsi qu'une certaine portion de la nappe de câbles dans le boîtier;
The aim of the process of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks and it consists
a) partially engaging the metal contacts in the housing, a part of said contacts extending beyond the corresponding face of said housing;
b) connecting the stripped ends of the conducting cables of the sheet to the corresponding ends of said contacts
c) pushing back the assembly in order to completely penetrate the contacts as well as a certain portion of the cable ply in the housing;
d) ensuring sealing between the housing and the insulating material constituting the sheet containing the conductors.

La figure 2 est une vue analogue à-la figure 1 illustrant la seconde phase du procédé;

The method of the invention as well as the means allowing its implementation will be better understood by the description which follows made with reference to the accompanying drawings by way of indicative example only, in which
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the first phase of the process
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating the second phase of the process;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line
III-III of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional view, taken along the line IV-IV of Figure 3 after the third phase of the process;

FIG. 6 is a sectional view taken along line VI-VI of FIG. 5.

Referring to FIG. 1, it can be seen that the problem to be solved consists in connecting the stripped ends 1 of conductive cables, normally embedded in an insulating material in the form of a sheet 2, to electrical contacts 3 maintained in an insulating housing 4 forming one of the two parts of a connector.

The first phase of the process consists in placing the contacts 3 in the housing 4 so that their rear ends 3a extend beyond the face 5 of the housing 4 (FIG. 1).

The second phase of the process consists in connecting the ends 1 of the cables to the contacts 3. This operation can be carried out by a connection process, such as electric welding by ultrasound or high frequency currents, by crimping, etc.

since said contacts extend out of the housing
The third phase of the process consists in pushing back into the housing 4 the contacts 3 connected to the cables 1 of the ply 2, the end 2a of said ply penetrating into said housing (FIG. 4).

To make the implementation of this last phase easier, the housing 4 has a notch 6 extending from its face 5 to that 7 adjacent. In this way, nothing comes to brake the penetration of the end of the ply 2 into the housing.

The fourth phase of the process consists in closing the notch 6 using an insulating cover 8 held in place by any suitable means: bonding, ultrasonic welding, etc. (FIGS. 5 and 6).

The invention also relates to other means to facilitate the implementation of this method. Thus, each contact 3, which is in the form of a flat bar, has on one of its edges a lug 9 of small importance, capable, when the contact is introduced via the face 5, of penetrating elastically into a small 1O notch on the housing. This arrangement allows the contacts to be positioned in the housing and to be held in place at the end of the first phase.

One of the faces of each contact 3 has a raised tab 11 capable of coming to bear against the bottom 6a of the notch 6 (FIG. 5) to limit the penetration of said contact at the end of the third phase.

During the execution of the third phase and under the action of the thrust which is exerted according to arrow F, the lugs 9 come out of their notch 10 and are placed in front of shoulders 12 of the housing (FIG. 4) thus opposing when the contacts are removed.

I1 should also be noted that the cover 8 has on its internal face and at its end cradles 13 matching the external profile of the ply 2 and cooperating with at least one cradle 14 of the housing to grip said ply (Figures 5 and 6).

The cover 8 has internally a peripheral bead 15 (Figure 6) engaging in a groove 16 (Figure 2) of the housing. In this way, the cover is perfectly positioned before it is fixed to the housing and to the ply 2.

The cover 8 also has, internally, a comb stop 17 opposing the recoil of the contacts 3 if the sheet 2 is subjected to an untimely detraction force.
