Description

Varnish, applicable on any surface with a certain porosity.

The present invention relates to a varnish, applicable on any surface, having a certain porosity. I1 differs from varnishes according to the prior art by its wide field of application and by its intrinsic qualities.

Until now, the use of varnishes was reserved for the wood sector. In this context, there has been much concern about the resistance of varnishes to air, light and little of their hardness, their resistance to mechanical action. The -notion of varnish has always been synonymous with a certain fragility.

On the contrary, the varnish according to the present invention has a very wide field of application and is very resistant to mechanical action.

I1 is applicable on any support with the only condition that this one has a certain porosity. It could not be applied on a surface that is too hard, too compact, for example on an annealed porcelain stoneware tile, but it can be used on any floor surface, on any floor covering or wall covering, having a certain porosity. It is perfectly suitable for wood, for example for furniture or floors, ..., on plastics and even on concrete. Its use on concrete eliminates the production of cement dust and practically cancels the phenomenon of alternating humidity. The surface treated with the varnish according to the present invention is particularly easy to maintain and has remarkable resistance to all aggressive agents. On the other hand, the varnish according to the invention, after correct application and drying, covers the treated surface of a film with very interesting mechanical properties. Said film resists wear, impact, scratches, ... Extreme hardness, it combines flexibility. Its application on soft wood for example, will maintain an impeccable surface, even if an action with a blunt instrument is exerted on said surface. The wood may be bruised below the varnish film, but the said film will regain its original appearance.

Finally, the varnish according to the invention has another interesting property. It does not appear, on its surface, when it is left in the open air, skin or benefits, unusable and annoying. The formation of such a skin with varnishes and paints according to the incoming prior art, on the one hand a loss of product and on the other hand, a deterioration of the product remaining, below said skin. There is in particular a concentration of dyes in said skin and the product remaining is no longer the same shade as the initial product. This property of the product according to the invention is due to one of its constituents hereinafter called anti-skin component.

The new varnish according to the invention is based on a polyurethane resin. It also contains drying agents, an anti-skin component and a mineral solvent.

Said resin is an alkyd-urethane resin, generally sold in solution in "white spirit".

The driers used are metal octoates and naphthenates. Their intervention in the composition of the varnish conditions the quality thereof, and in particular its hardness. They allow the varnish not to dry too quickly after application, ensuring slow evaporation of the solvent and thus conditions the hardness of the finished product.

Said solvent is a mineral solvent. We usually use white spirit. It allows the viscosity of the varnish according to the invention to be adjusted.

The anti-skin component is a known product such as methyl ethyl ketoxin. Its basic components of the varnish according to the invention enter into its composition, in the following proportions, expressed in parts by weight.

Solution de résine 70 à 84 parties en poids
Resin solution 70 to 84 parts by weight
Metal octoates or nephtenates 1.5 to 3. parts by weight
Anti-skin component 0.8 to 2 parts by weight
Mineral solvent 15 to 25 parts by weight
Such a varnish is transparent. Its fragility in light limits its use, indoors.

If it is desired to tint the varnish according to the invention, pigments or dyes known to those skilled in the art are added to the above composition. For good coloring, between 1.2 and 7.25 parts by weight of the transparent varnish are added.

The varnish according to the invention can also exist in a satin or matt version. To obtain said versions, matting agents known to those skilled in the art will be added to the varnish according to the invention, colored or not, at a rate of 3 to 12 parts by weight of the varnish.

The percentage of dry extract of the varnish according to the invention is much higher than the standards. Those skilled in the art know that this percentage of dry extract constitutes a criterion for the quality of a varnish.

The varnish according to the invention must be applied to perfectly prepared supports, free from grease, dust, waxes, etc.

It can be used as is by brush or roller, diluted in white spirit, with a spray gun. We usually pass several layers.

The layers must be etreminc2s and very drawn, which is a factor of economy but especially of solidity and adhesion of said varnish. Through such layers, the drying will be uniform and complete. On very porous or cellular, very absorbent bases, the first layer should be diluted with approximately 10 to 15% of white spirit.

Thus, the application of said layer will be facilitated, and, the amount of solvent to be evaporated slowly will be preserved, which is a guarantee of solidity. The covering power of the varnish according to the invention obviously depends on the support. it is estimated, for a first layer, from 18 to 22 m2 and more per liter for substrates with medium porosity and with a fairly smooth surface, 12 to 15 m2 per liter for substrates with significant and rough porosity. Said varnish, for the second or even the third layer, covers even more.

The drying of said varnish according to the invention is as important as its application. It conditions the homogeneity of the internal structures, that is to say the hardness of the finished product. Depending on the medium, it requires 3 to 5 hours. It should be done away from dust. A layer of the varnish according to the invention is recoverable after approximately 24 hours.

Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will be better understood on reading the following example. This illustration of the invention is not limiting.

EXEMPLE
- Solution de résine alkyd-uréthanne 75 parties en poids
(BAYER U 601-60 BV)
- Octoate de plomb 2 parties en poids
- Méthyl éthyl certaine 1 partie en poids
- White spirit 20 parties en poids
Son pourcentage d'extrait sec est de 49 %.
EXAMPLE
A varnish according to the invention has the following composition
- Solution of alkyd-urethane resin 75 parts by weight
(BAYER U 601-60 BV)
- Lead octoate 2 parts by weight
- Certain methyl ethyl 1 part by weight
- White spirit 20 parts by weight
Its percentage of dry extract is 49%.

After 22 days of exposure to the air of this varnish, part of the solvent (s) has evaporated but no skin or crust has appeared on its surface. A simple addition of white spirit restored the varnish to its initial viscosity and its total effectiveness.

This varnish after application and correct drying is very resistant.

- à la place de la solution BAYER 601-60 BV (qui permet l'obten- tion d'un vernis brillant), du BAYER U 601-SS (qui permet l'obtention d'un vernis mat ou satiné ;
This example can be reproduced in order to use
- in place of the BAYER 601-60 BV solution (which allows a glossy varnish to be obtained), BAYER U 601-SS (which allows a matt or satin varnish to be obtained;
- in place of lead octoate, cobalt, calcium, zirconium octoates and / or naphthenates; these various products are equivalent as siccatives but they each bring complementary properties specific to the final varnish. Mixtures of these various products can be used.

The various varnishes known and commercialized to date on the French market, varnishes based on "white spirit", generally have a dry extract rate lower than 45 Z whereas in the varnishes according to the invention the dry extract rate normally reaches 49 to 52.

The process for preparing the varnish according to the invention is a conventional process for the specialist; the latter knows in particular that the various constituents of the mixture must be added in a preferential order, with suitable stirring (vortex) and that the control of the viscosity of the product obtained must be carried out before introduction of the anti-skin constituent.
