Abstract

The invention relates to an ice piton intended to provide the mountaineer with a safe temporary anchoring point. It consists of a tubular cylindrical bar 1 comprising a ring 2 welded to one end and a bevel 4 for facilitating penetration into the ice. The retention teeth 3 (or spines) are formed by a plurality of raised designs remaining after machining of a bar with a polygonal cross-section. The invention is particularly useful to mountaineers when advancing and for their safety

Description

The present invention relates to the field of mountaineering and more particularly that of ice pins that mountaineers plant in the ice to obtain a temporary anchor point.

In this field, the prior art consists of two main types of ice cream pins: tubular pins (hollow) and conical pins (solid). Tubular pins generally have a continuous external thread with significant relief (in this case the pins are driven into the glass by screwing them) or a continuous fine pitch (and in this case they are driven with a hammer). As regards the solid conical pins, these comprise a continuous external thread or a plurality of reliefs constituting thorns.

l'arrachement.
The ice-cream spindle of the invention is of a completely new type since it is tubular and with thorns: it therefore has numerous advantages over existing spindles
- being tubular it can be hammered in,
- with thorns on its outer periphery, themselves
arranged along a net, this pin has excellent
retained in ice while allowing easy extraction
by unscrewing,
- the asymmetrical shape of the spines allowing a depression (au-
hammer) easy while ensuring excellent resistance to
tearing.

Thus the ice spindle of the invention combines all the advantages to which one can add that of ease of manufacture since it is produced by turning.

Another important characteristic of this new ice spindle is that the spines are obtained directly by the turning operation of a polygonal bar (square, pentagonal or hexagonal); the thorns are the reliefs remaining after this turning operation which removes the metal by coming to be substantially flush with the different dishes of the polygon used. The turning tool is designed to give an asymmetrical shape to the remaining reliefs, while maintaining a slight slope on the side where the spindle is inserted into the glass.

environ).
We can better understand the whole point of the invention thanks to the following figures in which
- fig. 1 shows a general view of the spindle of the invention
and fig. 2 a side view of this same pin (scale 1
about).

- Fig. 3 represents 3 of the different profiles used for the
realization of this spindle (scale 2).

- La fig. 4 une coupe longitudinale grossie de la fig. 1. - Fig. 4 an enlarged longitudinal section of FIG. 1.

Figs. 1 and 2 represent the spindle of the invention consisting of a tube 1 of special steel to which is fixed by any known means (brazing) a ring 2. The teeth 3 are what remains of the turning of a substantially hexagonal bar to the dish of each pan of the hexagon.

Fig. 3 shows the 3 bar profiles most used to make the spindle of the invention (square, pentagonal and more commonly hexagonal). The more sides the polygon has, the shorter the const = steamed spines: this facilitates the entry of the spindle into the ice but reduces the resistance to tearing off the spindle.

In fig. 4 (section a in fig. I) is presented the asymmetrical shape which can be given to the teeth or spines 3 to ensure both good penetration and good retention.

We will not depart from the framework of the invention by making the ice spindle with a different ring 2, or fixed differently, or by modifying the angle of the chamfer 4 for penetration into the ice; in the same way the shape of the teeth, the pitch and the direction of the threading can be between different.

It is also possible to produce a double "thread" to promote the penetration of the spindle or to replace the planar faces of the sides of the polygon with concave faces without departing from the invention.
