Abstract
Description
The invention relates to improving the heat stability of halo-vinyl resins, in particular polyvinyl chloride.
In main patent 83 12691, a stabilization process has been described which consists in incorporating into the resin a mercapto-ester derived from a polyol, part of the acid residues of this ester may not contain mercapto groups.
The main patent also relates to resin compositions thus stabilized: the compositions described contain a plasticizer, epoxidized soybean oil and stabilizers based on metal compounds, the mercapto-esters being used as co-stabilizers.
The present first Addition is based on the unforeseen fact that mixed mercapto-esters containing residues of organic acid free of -SH are suitable as stabilizers even in the absence of other adjuvants, in particular of metallic compounds and oils epoxidized in the known technique. This represents an advantage in addition to that which resides in the economy which one realizes by the use of mixed mercapto-esters in place of ordinary mercapto-esters, due to the reduction in the amount of acid to group -SH, costly part of the ester molecule.
The mixed mercapto-esters of polyols lead to compositions whose olfactory properties are better than those of resins containing ordinary mercapto-esters.
Thus, while the thioglycolates, that is to say mercaptoacetates, of polyols give odorous products, it becomes possible to have practically odorless compositions by the use of mixed esters, in which the OH of a polyol are partly esterified with thioglycolic acid and partly with an organic acid free from sulfur, for example a C6 to C18 fatty acid, such as hexanolque, octanorque, stearic or other.
The invention is illustrated by the following nonlimiting examples, produced according to the technique described on page 10, lines 7-31, of the main patent.
cial PALATINOL AH).EXAMPLES 1 to 5
The compositions subjected to the tests comprise 100 parts by weight of polyvinyl chloride, known below.
the trade name of "LACQVYL S 111 at
index K = 67, and
40 parts by weight of dioctyl phthalate (trade name
cial PALATINOL AH).
The heat resistance tests are carried out at 1900C, the speed of exit of the test pieces being adjusted to 30 minutes.
In the table of results below, the% indicating the proportions of additives incorporated in the samples, with the passage to the oven.
Exemple n 1 2 3 4 5
Example 1 2 3 4 5
Tetrakis (mercapto-3
penta propionate)
erythrityl ................ 0 0.4% 0 0 0
Bis (mercapto-3 propionate)
bis pentaerythityity octanoate ..................... 0 0 0.4% 0 0.4%
Epoxidized soybean oil ....... 0 0 0 4% 4%
Yellow index
after 20 minutes .......... 160 135 127 155 90
The first observation, which emerges from these results, is that the mixed mercapto-ester of Example 3 (bis-bis), by itself allows the yellow index to be reduced in 20 minutes from 160 to 127 in l absence of any metallic stabilizer. In the presence of epoxidized oil, the reduction is 90 to 155 (examples 4-5), therefore very significant.
4 groupes SH ;
On the other hand, given the following molecular weights and numbers of -SH groups
Pentaerythrityl tetra (mercaptopropionate) ... 488
4 SH groups;
bis (mercaptopropionate) bis octanoate
pentaerythrityl .......................... 566
2 SH groups; the weight contents of SH are respectively,
27% and 11.7% which means that the 0.4% of stabilizer, used in Examples 4 and 5, represents, compared to the resin, 27% of 0.4 = 0.108% of SH for the tetra, and 11 , 7% of 0.4 = 0.047% "" for bis-bis.
In other words, with 2.3 times less SU in the mixed mercaptoester (bis-bis) than in the ordinary mercapto-ester (tetra) there is better stabilization, which constitutes a marked economy.

Stability time, in minutes 15 18 18 43 53
As in the previous tests, the mixed mercapto-ester (bis-bis) of examples 8 and 10 proves to be as effective as the mercapto-ester (tetrakis) of example 7, although it contains half as many -SH groups than the latter.
The association of the mixed compound with the conventional stabilizers with Ba and Zn (ex. 9-10) provides an improvement in the stability of (53-43): 43 = 23.2% which is quite appreciable.
