Abstract

Powdered product for spreading on slicks of aromatic, aliphatic or paraffinic hydrocarbons floating on a water surface in order to solidify them with the objective of neutralising and then recovering and reusing them in various industrial utilisations, the residue obtained without causing damage to the aquatic environment. The product is obtained merely by mixing two constituents: a. Chlorinated or perchlorinated olefin polymer. b. Bentonite modified by a quaternary ammonium. The percentages can vary as a function of the hydrocarbon to be treated. The product according to the invention is particularly intended for combating slicks of hydrocarbons on water surfaces.

Description

The present invention relates to a powdered product to be spread on a sheet of floating hydrocarbons in water to solidify it.

The products currently used to combat pollution due to an oil slick floating on a body of water are liquid or foaming products, such as detergents, whose main purpose is to dissolve the slick, but generally cause damage to wildlife and the aquatic flora of the environment, and do not allow total or partial recovery of this sheet for subsequent industrial reuse.

The product according to the invention overcomes these drawbacks.

The formula of the product according to the invention is as follows
a) chlorinated or perchiorated olefin polymer
b) bentonite modified by a quaternary ammonium.

The percentages between the two constituents of the formula can vary depending on the hydrocarbon to be treated.

The mixture of the two constituents of the formula by mechanical means, such as a powder mixer, constitutes the final product in the form of a cream-colored powder protected for use.

The thickening of the product according to lt.nvention in thin and multiple layers, and this until saturation, by sea or air means on the contour of the sheet of hydrocarbon causes by solidification, the formation of a belt limiting 1 ' extension of the tablecloth.

The spreading by the same process on the total surface of the tablecloth causes its solidification, that is to say: causing it to pass from the liquid state to the solid state, definitively stopping its extension, canceling its properties adhesion.

The solidification of the hydrocarbon sheet, by the process of spreading the product according to the invention, does not prevent it from floating on the surface of the water, even in the event of fragmentation.

The quantity of the product according to the invention to be used to fight against pollution of a sheet of hydrocarbons is variable depending on the nature of the latter; it can represent from 20% to 50% of the weight of the sheet. The phenomenon of solidification of the water table by. the product according to the invention allows easier recovery of the residue thus obtained and, reuse of this residue for various industrial uses. This greatly reduces the cost of an antipollution operation with the product according to the invention.

The residue obtained by spreading the product according to the invention does not cause damage to the aquatic flora or fauna of the environment.

The industrial re-uses of the residue obtained by the product according to the invention are various: the residue can be used as fuel, under certain conditions, or be incorporated in certain formulations of chemical products, such as bituminous coatings or others.

The product according to the invention is particularly intended for combating pollution from the layers of aromatic, aliphatic, paraffinic hydrocarbons, on bodies of water, by the process of spreading.
