Abstract

The handles (10,16) of a pliers or pipe wrench are pivoted on a bolt (18) which also passes through the upper jaw (12). This jaw has a specially shaped slot which grips the one handle (10) tightly but permits limited relative rotation of the other handle (16). The lower jaw (20) has a similarly shaped slot, but this slot grips the second handle (16) tightly and allows the first handle to move sideways. The lower jaw can be slid along the second handle and clamped by the screw (26) to provide the required jaw opening.
