Abstract

The pump piston (10) has a double piston ring (11) which effects the seal with the inner surface (16) of the cylinder (15). An absorbant felt ring (12) is located in a groove (4) (14) on each side of the piston ring (11). During the up-stroke of the piston, the upper felt ring absorbs the lubricant displaced by the piston ring, whilst the lower ring (12) reapplies the lubricant, collected during the down-stroke, to the cylinder wall (16). The reverse happens during the down-stroke.
