Abstract

Golf clubs are made with head and shaft as an integral item made of the same materials except the core of a large head on a club such as a driver may comprise an insert of different material, opt. denser than that used for the shaft and the surface of the head. Avoids the assembly and inherent weakness of a fastening between a club head and a separate shaft. Pref. the shaft and at least the external form of the head are produced by injection moulding using a plastic moulding material (unspecified) opt. contg. a filler of divided metal for increased mass and/or fibres for increased stiffness.

Description

The present invention relates to the manufacture of golf clubs and, more specifically, the problems due to the connection of the handle and the head.

The current technique for manufacturing golf clubs consists of the assembly of two sub-assemblies: the head and the handle. The materials used for each of these sub-assemblies are varied: there are heads made of steel, wood, plastic or light metal and handles made of steel, wood or synthetic material. However, many manufacturing and use problems are linked to the fact that the head and the handle of the club must be joined together: in fact, for the manufacturer, it is necessary to provide a means of fixing the handle to the head, means which is in general the sticking of the handle in a socket provided for this purpose and, for the user, there can be nuisances for his game, nuisances due to an imperfect bonding which would not make coincide exactly l 'axis of the handle and the axis of the sleeve.

The object of the present invention consists of a means of eliminating these assembly problems.

The present invention consists in manufacturing in one piece the head + handle assembly of the club. For this we can, for example, use a moldable synthetic material which, while constituting the handle, comes to wrap - partially or totally - a core which constitutes part of the volume of the head of the club. The result is a uniform and continuous junction of the club's neck and head. The present invention therefore relates to the new product that constitutes a golf club without discontinuity between the handle and the head.

The advantages of this invention are manifold: the present invention makes it possible to choose at will before molding, shaping or other manufacturing method, the shape, the mass and the material of the core, whether the latter is hollow or not.

- The present invention allows to position at will the center of gravity of the head of the club.

- The present invention makes it possible to continuously carry out the neck-t # te junction of golf clubs, which has an advantage for the golf player who benefits from new qualities of the club, in particular by providing elastic characteristics of the uniform junction of the handle and the head.

This non-exhaustive list shows the value of the invention for the game of golf.

To better understand the object of the present invention, a golf club produced according to the invention and shown in the accompanying drawing will be described, by way of purely illustrative and non-limiting example.

In this drawing: - Figure 1 shows a neck-head junction such as those made in the prior art.

- la figure 2 représente une jonction manche-tête d'un club de golf selon l'invention.- Figure 2 shows a neck-head junction of a golf club according to the invention.

In FIG. 1 which represents the conventional solution for connecting the head and the handle, it can be seen that the head 1 has a socket 2 into which the handle 3 fits.
FIG. 2 represents a golf club according to the invention: it is here a wood. It can be seen that the head 1 consists of a core 2 enveloped by the material constituting the handle 3. For better clarity of the drawing, a truncated club head has been shown. We see in the drawing that the core 2 occupies most of the volume of the head 1. We also see that the core 2 is regularly enveloped by the material which constitutes the handle 3. We also see that the core 2 has an appendage 2a whose section decreases towards the handle 3, this being a means allowing good cohesion of the sleeve 3 and head 1 and a means of distributing the forces which the junction of handle 3 and head 1 can undergo during the course of a golf stroke. The material used to make the handle 3 can be a plastics material metallically loaded in order to weigh it down or reinforced with fibers in order to stiffen it; this material can be molded easily, the handle 3, the head 1 and their connection can be produced by overmolding the core 2 using an injection overmolding process for example. The material used for the core 2 can be heavier than that which is useful ~ se for the handle 3, this in order to be able to balance the club; it can be, according to another variant, identical to that which constitutes the handle 3, this in order to produce a homo gene head 1. According to another variant, there may not be a core 2 or there may be a partially enveloped core 2. It can therefore be seen that the main characteristic of golf clubs according to the invention is the fact that they do not have a socket or end piece for fixing the handle to the head but that there is a continuous junction of the handle 3 and of the head 1, which thus constitute a single piece.
