Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method and a device for supplying alternating current to incandescent filament bulbs in order to increase their lifespan.
The rupture of the filaments of incandescent bulbs is most often due to the overheating of filaments produced by variations in the supply voltage or the placement of filaments in the undersized envelopes of special bulbs. For lighting devices comprising several bulbs, for example chandeliers, the very frequent replacement of bulbs, the filaments of which are broken, constitutes relatively important work and in the case of special bulbs, replacement is often very expensive.
The object of the invention is to design a method and a device making it possible to considerably increase the life of incandescent bulbs.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that it consists in supplying the bulbs with a reduced voltage which is of the order of 46 to 48% of the nominal voltage of the bulbs.
Practical experiences have shown that such a reduction in the supply voltage makes it possible to multiply by seven the life of a bulb while the light flux emitted by the bulb is reduced only by the order of 40 at 41%. The invention thus makes it possible to achieve, surprisingly, considerable savings.
The invention also relates to a device for implementing this method.
The device according to the invention consists of a voltage variator inserted in the supply circuit of a bulb comprising an actuating member provided with a mark which can be moved in front of two dials, one of which indicates the consumption in Watt of the bulb supplied and the other the optimal operating ranges at reduced voltage for each bulb of a given nominal power.
Such a device is simple and inexpensive and its handling very flexible and easy. It allows operation at nominal voltage, reduced operation called ambient and operation in the optimal range corresponding to a reduction in voltage of the order of 46 to 48%.
Other embodiments and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description which follows, with reference to the appended drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the drive according to the invention
tion and
figure 2 shows on a larger scale the dials of the variator re
shown in Figure t.
The variator, according to the invention, shown here comprises a voltage variator known per se such as a reostat or an electronic variator. This drive is housed in a box 1 and includes an adjustment button 2 provided with a mark 3.
The reference 3 of the variator can be moved in front of two paral lifts dials Cl, C2 provided on the cover of the case 1.
The dial C1 indicates in watts the full supply of one or more bulbs supplied through the variator according to the invention. When the mark 3 of button 2 is brought opposite position 60 of the dial C1, a 60 watt bulb is supplied at its nominal voltage for example
at 110 v or 200 V. Its luminescence is then that indicated by the manufacturer for normal operation.
The C2 dial indicates the positions and the optimal economic use allowing to considerably increase the life of a bulb.
When one feeds, through the variator according to the invention for example one or more 60 Watt bulb, the reference 3 of the button 2 is brought opposite the 60 Watt position of the dial C2. The supply voltage of the bulbs is thus reduced by around 46 to 48 t. The bulbs remain normally lit but their brightness is reduced. By cons it has been found that thanks to this reduction in voltage the life of the bulbs is multiplied by seven, which is a considerable advantage given the loss of relatively low luminescence.
The following practical experiments were carried out to demonstrate the advantages obtained by means of the method and the device according to the invention
We first performed duration tests with bulbs powered directly by the sector, that is to say at their nominal voltage, the 220 Volts. Bulbs of the Flame type, frosted, 60 W, 220-230 V, base 22 were used. Ten bulbs of this type were lit continuously and four operations of extinction and re-ignition were carried out each day. The tests gave the following lifetimes for the different bulbs
Bulb N0 Lifespan
1,584 hours
2,528 hours
3,744 hours
4,672 hours
5,770 hours
6,600 hours
7,840 hours
8,582 hours
9,630 hours
10,790 hours
The average duration is then 674 hours
Identical tests were carried out with bulbs of the same type but supplied through the variator according to the invention with a reduction of the order of 46 to 48% of the nominal supply voltage These tests gave the following results
NO of the Life Bulb
1 4 776 hours
2 5 280 hours
3 5 109 hours
4 4 910 hours
5 5 200 hours
6 4,900 hours
These results correspond to an average lifespan of 5,029 hours
It is then found that the average life is almost multiplied by eight free from the use of the method and the device according to the invention.
On the other hand, the lumen flux of the bulbs of the first tests in which the supply voltage was the nominal voltage was 690 LMS and for the bulbs powered with a reduced voltage, of 400 LMS. The reduction in luminous flux is therefore only 40.58%, which is negligible compared to the large increase in the service life obtained. Currently, users of multiple-bulb luminaires most often use low-power bulbs, in particular 25 W and 40 W. In addition, it will be noted that the cost of a more powerful bulb (60 W) for the production of a flux of 400 LMS, which corresponds to that of a 40 W bulb supplied at its nominal voltage, is only 10% higher compared to that of the 40 W bulb. This clearly demonstrates the unexpected savings can achieve through the use of the method and the device according to the invention.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described and shown here, but many modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
