Abstract

An aircraft tyre is built with a composite subtread reinforcement system involving at least three superimposed plies each having a cord bias of 0-30 degrees from the circumferential axis, a central portion made of relatively inextensible cords and borders made of relatively extensible cords. The tyre profile, when mounted on a wheel but not inflated has a carcass crown curvature radius of up to 0.2, pref. 0.08-0.15, and a max. sidewall curvature radius of up to 0.25. Used for mfr. of tyres having a carcass crown curvature of up to 0.12, pref. 0.04-0.10, and a max. sidewall curvature ratio of up to 0.14, to satisfy normal aircraft tyre shape standards, since extension of the sub-tread borders by service pressures modifies the shape of the carcass. Deformation of the extensible subtread reinforcement borders allows the carcass crown and sidewall curvatures to be reduced to the required levels whilst establishing a tensile stress in the subtread borders to suppress stable dynamic stress variations at high speed. Suppresses vibrations which can otherwise develop sufficiently to initiate delamination and loss of tread if the subtread reinforcement border stress patterns are low or even compressive.

The main patent application 81 02788 relates to a heavy-duty tire having a carcass reinforcement
formed of at least one layer of radiant cables anchored to
at least one bead wire in each bead and a frame
tripartite summit composed of a median part and a
two lateral parts, the edges of the median part
being in contact each with a lateral part, each
of these three parts being constituted by at least one
sheet of cables at an angle between 0 and 300
with the circumferential direction, the relative arrow of
convexity of the carcass reinforcement in the vertex being
at most equal to 0.12 and preferably between 0.04
and 0.08 and the convexity relative arrow of the armature of
carcass in the sidewall being not more than 0.14, the tires
mounted on its rim and swells at its pressure
service, but not loaded, thus having a meridian profile
quasi-rectangular, this tire being characterized in
what the carcass reinforcement (2) of the tire (1) no
inflated and mounted on its rim of service (J) on the one hand
a relative arrow of convexity in the vertex at most equal
at 0.20 and preferably between 0, 8 and 0> 15 and
a relative arrow of convexity in the flanks at the most
equal to 0.25, on the other hand a length such as
inflationsa balance curve-at the shoulders (8)
is located radially out of its curve in the
non-inflated tire, and in that the middle portion
(7, 7) of the crown reinforcement t (7) is formed of targets
whose extensibility is weak and preferably close
from zero, while the lateral parts (7a, 7b, 7c) are
formed of cables of which 11 extensibility is very large.

The inflation at the service pressure and, moreover, the test pressure of such a tire is accompanied by a considerable expansion of its top. This is due to the lthensitivity of the circumferential cables of the crown reinforcement.

In certain driving conditions, particularly at high speed, such a top may be injured by foreign bodies (pebbles, metal parts from other vehicles, etc.) lying on the path of the tire.

A protection of said armature is therefore necessary.

Because of the importance of the expansion of the top due to inflation, it is impossible to use metal or textile cables, called elastic cables, usual, the elasticity of these cables being insufficient to follow the expansion of the top and as a result, it would hinder the expansion of it.

On the other hand, the expansion is of such importance that these elastic cables would behave like usual cables and would provide undesirable reinforcement of the crown reinforcement.

The present addition aims to describe means which, cooperating with the crown reinforcement described in the aforementioned main application to protect this armature, do not obstruct said expansion of the vertex, nor reinforce it undesirably.

Thus, the invention consists, in a tire of the kind described in the above-mentioned main application, in arranging radially outside the crown reinforcement at least one sheet of corrugated cables in the plane of the tablecloth.

Preferably
the spacing of one cable to the next is between 50 and 100% of the peak-to-peak amplitude of the corrugations
the wavelength of the corrugations is between 100% and 200 μm of said peak-to-peak amplitude
the cables are parallel in the sheet, that is to say the corrugations are in phase;

- les axes moyens des ondulations des câbles d'une nappe ont orientés à 0 ou à900 par rapportàla direction circonférentielle du pneumatique.  the average axes of the corrugations of the cables of a ply have been oriented at 0 or 900 with respect to the circumferential direction of the tire.

Said sheet may also be formed of a cable knit obtained, for example, by simply crossing the corrugations. In this particular case, the spacing of a target relative to the next is at most equal to the peak-to-peak amplitude, the undulations of the wires. The elasticity of the fabric increases when the spacing of the cables is decreased.

A satisfactory protective screen has been produced in the following manner for an aircraft tire, with dimensions of 46 × 16-20 cm:
Cables 1 mm in diameter each formed of 9 steel wires 23/100 mm in diameter
Ripples: sinusoidal
Amplitude of peak-to-peak corrugations: 5 mm
wavelength of the waves: 5 mm
Cable to cable spacing: 3.5 mm
Parallel cables, that is, in phase
Average axis of the corrugations: oriented at 90 ° with respect to the circumferential direction.

The protective screen may also be produced using at least one sheet of corrugated cables whose average axes of the corrugations are oriented obliquely with respect to the circumferential direction of the tire.

Rippling is understood to mean any sinusoidal or sawtooth pattern, with peaks that are clipped or not.

In the single figure of the drawing we see, for example, two parallel targets 7, sinusoidally adjacent and wavy,
The spacing e of the cables is equal to the distance between the mean axes 71-of the two undulations. Its wavelength A is twice the distance between two consecutive intersection points I and I 'of a sinusoid 7 with the mean axis 71. The amplitude A is the distance from a peak 701 to the following 702 of a sinusoid 7.

the corrugated cables may also be replaced by coil springs section for example elliptical (rectangular) whose major axis (the long side) is parallel to the plane of the sheet they form. Preferably, steel wire is used for this purpose. It can also be used as a screen
close to ~ Sarallel a ply of metal fibers ./ (diameter: 0.1 to 1 mm, length: 5 to 20 mm) dispersed in a layer of gum.

The use of corrugated cables to form shields is known. However, the screen-sheet cables used in conventional tires have relatively small amplitudes and wavelengths. As a result, they are unable to follow the significant deformations of tire peaks of the species described in the main application, when inflated to service and test pressures.
The originality of the corrugated cables described in this additional application lies in the large magnitudes of the amplitudes and wavelengths of the corrugations, as well as in the spacings between cables of the same layer.
