Abstract

The rotor for the alternator comprises a ferromagnetic ring (1) inside which permanent magnets (2) are held by their own magnetic force. The ring and magnets are placed into a mould and a plastics material, for example nylon, and injected into the mould so as to form a coating over the rotor. The two parts of the mould define the surface shapes which are required of the internal and external surfaces of the rotor. The rotor may be driven on a shaft which includes an excentric surface operating the contact breaker which is required in an ignition system. The rotor requires no further balancing and is extremely light, being 70 per centless than the weight of conventional rotors, and is partic. intended for motorcycle alternators providing ignition current.
