Abstract
Description
The invention is in the field of improving the protection of armored vehicles against the recent threat of kinetic energy shells, the origin and principle of which are summarized as follows:
After rapid evolution, kinetic energy under-calibrated shells (APDS) have demonstrated their ballistic advantage over recent conventional anti-tank shells of the UESH (crushing head) and HEAT (hollow charge) type and have led to the definition of the current technique called HVAPDS-FS (Hyper Velocity, Armor Piercing - Discording Sabot - Fin Stabilized). These projectiles do not pierce the metal by exploding on impact but by delivering very high kinetic energy (thanks to a higher initial speed at 1500 m / s), via their hyper-hard metallic core, on a very small target surface due to their great finesse (hence the name of arrow-shell in French).
The principle of which the invention describes the application consists in counteracting this dangerous characteristic of kinetic energy (EC) shells by giving the axis of the projectile a certain angle relative to the trajectory at the end of its course, so that the perforating core attacks the target at an angle, therefore with a larger impact surface.
In the current state of the art and in view of the recent introduction of shells
EC, only research on the metallurgical composition of the shields and their arrangement (in parallel plates, with ceramic alloys, etc.) was done. To our knowledge, the process described is therefore new. Its principle is as follows
The EC projectile is made of a very dense metal (d = 16 to 19 kg / dm3) and it is very fast (V = 1200 to 1500 m / s), the mV2 product is therefore high. It is therefore difficult to curve its trajectory. On the other hand, it is possible, thanks to a relatively low intensity action, to make it rotate around its center of gravity. We know that the EC shell is sensitive to small shocks, with vegetation for example, during its course. However, the aerodynamic empennage with which it is provided stabilizes it fairly quickly on the ballistic axis. The method described by the invention consists in applying a brutal lateral force on the front of the projectile at the very moment when it will touch the target to give it a biased position that the aerodynamic stabilizer will no longer have time to correct before the im pact.
Taking into account that the attacking projectile travels more than 10 cm in 0.1 millisecond (ms), the reaction time must be short and can only be the result of a "mechanism" with very low natural inertia. Hence the form donated to the "dynamic shielding" plate described by the invention.
It takes the form of a thick metal sheet pierced over its entire surface with rectangular cells. These cells are arranged in staggered rows to avoid the presence of insensitive zones and house as many shell-firing ammunition, in the form of cartridges, the cases of which are housed in the thickness of the plate and the shell-hunting bullet of which alone protrudes from the flat surface of dynamic shielding. The elementary ammunition has the exact shape of the cells which therefore serve as a firing chamber and it is ignited by the impact of an attacking projectile on its shell-hunting head (CO). It is charged with a breaking powder because its detonation must be practically instantaneous, from the impactor shock, to attack the EC projectile as far as possible in front of its center of gravity.
Since the exterior ballistics is very short, the CO light metal projectile can affect the non-aerodynamic shape of a horizontal parallelepiped which gives it the greatest possible striking surface.
In order to facilitate the loading and unloading of ammunition, the honeycomb plate can tilt forwards with a thinner armor plate, which is normally integral with it and which holds the ammunition in place during the positioning of the added dynamic armor . This thin doubling plate also acts as a front bolt face when a CO munition is detonated; the recoil being itself absorbed by the main armor of the vehicle on which the assembly is applied.
5). Une planche 3/3, enfin, illustre en 5 dessins (fig. 6 à 10) une séquence de fonctionnement. Three plates of drawings are attached to the presentation. A board numbered 1/3 gives a general view of the system in the loading position (fig. 1) and in the use position (fig. 2). A 2/3 plate shows a small (fig. 3) and large scale (fig. 4) section of a loaded dynamic armor, as well as a perspective of a CO munition (fig. 5). Finally, a board 3/3 illustrates in 5 drawings (fig. 6 to 10) an operating sequence.
2). The embodiment is simple although only tests will be able to fix the final dimensions of the constituent elements (thickness of the active armor plate, dimensions of the cells, spacings between CO munitions, height of overhang and shape of the head, optimal inclination of the armor on the vertical ...). To facilitate loading, the plate (1) can be hinged at its base on the protected volume (2). See plate 1/3. It is then possible to fold it forward in the position shown in Figure 1. The ammunition cartridges with bead (fig. 5) can, under these conditions, be placed in each cell. It then suffices to also fold the thin metal plate (3) forwards until it is pressed against (1), and to tilt the assembly backwards in the operating position (fig. 2 ).
Once the CO munitions are in place, the defensive activation of the dynamic armor is done as follows (Plate 3/3). An aggressive projectile (9) approaches the armor (fig. 6). When its point is a short distance from the shielding, it violently strikes the head (5) of a CO munition. This head instantly transmits the shock from a striker (6) to the charge (7) and (8) of the cartridge according to the principle of the pressure igniter. The CO munition detonates (fig. 8) and its head laterally attacks the front of the EC shell (fig. 9). The stabilizing stabilizer of the latter did not have time to operate and the shell struck the active armor (1) and the protected armor (2) in an unfavorable position (fig. 10) to the effectiveness of its perforating core.
The invention is, in principle, susceptible of industrial applications only in an exclusively military field. In this area, however, and following favorable technical evaluations, it could be widely used for better protection of the exposed (front) parts of combat structures and devices; and on these, it would
- to thin the underlying shield with resulting weight gain,
- to reduce somewhat the inclination of the frontal glacis, whereas these must currently be tilted more than 800 vertically to be effective,
- create additional protection against conventional explosive shells.
