Abstract

The hydraulic pump clutch has a drive shaft carrying a drive gear fixed to a bush. The gear is permanently engaged with the driving pinion. The shaft is hollow and houses a spring loaded, hydraulically operated piston. The piston has a circumferential groove with sloping sides, and has four equi-spaced holes in which are housed four ball bearings. Under the action of the spring, the ball bearings nest in the groove and the gear rotates freely on the shaft. When the piston is operated the balls are forced into the indentations in the ring, locking it to the shaft.
