Abstract

The power rheostat or electric heating resistance is wound in segments, each segment having a former rod parallel to the central shaft used in rheostat application. The winding is distributed along the length of the former rod and is brought together to cover the outer edge of a segment of a disc fixed perpendicular to the former rods. The winding in this form allows a greater length of lower resistivity wire to be used and increases the cooling surface available to remove heat from the winding. In rheostat applications, a slider is placed so it runs on the part of the resistance winding which is bent over the edge of the disc. The former rods are equally spaced round the disc, and a central hole in the disc carries the operating shaft.
