Abstract

The relative inclination of one member (3) relative to another (4) is controllable through small angular increments by the use of an internal sprocket mounted on an eccentric and running between internal gears cut into the ends of each member. The mechanism is particularly applicable to the seat back angle adjuster provided in motor vehicles. The two members (3,4) have a flat circular end. One has a circular recess (5) and a second smaller diameter recess (7) with an internal gear (6) cut into it. The other has a circular plateau (8) with a gear cut inside it, having a different number of teeth to the other gear. A smaller dia. sprocket (12) lies between and meshes with the two gears which are placed face to face. The sprocket (12) is mounted on a shaft (15) carrying an eccentric (14). When the shaft is rotated the eccentric motion of the sprocket and the differing tooth numbers of the two gears cause relative motion between the members.
