Abstract

A hockey stick has a head of conventional curved shape made of one plastics material. (I) and covered with a sheath made of another material (II). Pref. (II) is highly impact and abrasion resistant and can be applied by an overmoulding technique, opt. is of polyurethane. Pref. (I) is a relatively rigid, low cost material, pref. polypropylene, opt. is solid or expanded and filled with talc and/or a fibrous material. The core of the head may be integrally moulded with the handle- opt. the handle is partly covered with a fabric grip included as a mould insert. The prod. is cheaper and more durable than a conventional laminated wooden stick.

Description

t1 invention relates to a hockey stick made of plastic and its manufacturing process
For its rigidity and its good resistance to blows and friction s to which the sticks are constantly subjected
ia during the practice of hockey, these are, to date made of carved wood and therefore require a highly qualified workforce which is scarce hence very long delivery times and high prices, all this for a longevity little more than about eight months.

This is why, for some time, manufacturers have tried to market hockey sticks made of plastic.

In a first embodiment, the stick was executed in a single plastic material molded in one piece but then the material used is perfectly resistant but had a price such that the stick reached a higher price than that of a stick traditional either had an acceptable price but did not resist knocks and friction, especially since a hockey stick has in its curved part a very flat shape and therefore less resistant.

In another embodiment, on a handle made of an extruded plastic tube, was fitted a massive molded plastic head, which, although in a lesser manner, posed the same problem as above and, moreover, gave the stick, in particular its curved shape, a thickness beyond that fixed by the standards for hockey sticks, which, even for educational games, practically prohibited their use.

A result targeted by the invention is a plastic stock with a profile similar or even identical to that of wooden sticks, resistant to knocks and friction to which subject it practice hockey and which, neansoinstest of a very advantageous cost price compared with wooden sticks.

To this end, the invention relates to a stick made of plastic for hockey, in particular characterized in that the curved part comprises a surface layer which is made of a material different from that making the lemma of this curved part as well as the handle.

It also has for object, this method of manufacturing this stick.

The invention will be better understood with the aid of the description given below, by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the attached drawing which represents, schematically, the butt seen in longitudinal section.

Referring to the drawing, we see the curved part 1 and, partially, the handle 2 of a stick 3.

According to the essential characteristic of the invention, the curved part comprises a surface layer 4 which is made of a material different from that making the core 5 of this curved part 1 as well as the handle 2 and these different materials are chosen according to their respective qualities.

The one carrying out the handle 2 and the amAe 5 of the curved part 1 will be chosen from those fulfilling the double condition of a low cost price and of a high rigidity such as polypropylene, possibly loaded with fibers, for example talc. The one producing the surface layer 4 of the curved part 1 will be chosen for its high resistance to knocks and friction, for example in polyurethane, the fairly high cost price of which is no longer a handicap given the small quantity required.

These two parts 4 and 3 are produced by molding. One of the plates is molded in isolation and then integrated into the mold i cast from the other part. For example, the part forming the handle 2 and.

the friend 3 is molded in isolation and then l & e 3 is engaged, in the manner of a core, in the mold of the surface layer 4 which, being cast in situ, will thus be intimately linked to the core 5, the surface of which may moreover present a certain roughness. Furthermore, by providing during the production of the core, thickness of the surface layer, when the stock is finished, said layer will not form any additional thickness,
Thanks to this method of manufacturing the stick, it can therefore have exactly the same shape as traditional hockey sticks and in particular can be flattened in their curved part 1 while being extremely resistant and of a competitive price.

Obviously, like certain traditional sticks, the handle 2 can receive a lining, for example textile.
