Abstract

Above or below the periphery of the plate is a sealing ring made of a soft and deformable material of known compsn. The sealing ring is located in a flanged and slotted support ring, which pushes the sealing ring against the internal surface of the column. The slotted support ring is pref. made of metal and, except when compressed, has a larger outer dia. than the bore dia. of the column. The slotted support ring is pref. located in lugs fixed to the sliding plate. The sealing ring is pref. made of braid, stuffing flock, or woven fabric. The flanged and slotted support ring can be compressed while plates are moved to a desired position in a column employed in all branches of the chemical industry, e.g. in mfg. petrochemicals or foods. When the compression is removed, the support ring pushes the sealing ring outwards to make a very efficient seal.
