Abstract

The seal (1,2) uses dynamic deflection to prevent oil (9) from passing between the barrel of a revolving shaft (4) and an opening in a casing (3) of e.g. an automatic gear box. The opening is lined by a sleeve (1) with one or more external radial flanges (6) at the inboard extremity. The deflector (2) has a cylindrical cup form, being mounted co-axially on the shaft to house the projecting flanged (6) extremity of the sleeve. The internal deflector walls (7) may be nominally conical with the base of the cone forming the open end.
