Abstract

Digester is for the anaerobic fermentation of organic waste for the prodn. of methane. The digester is of the type which has an infeed pipe for liquefied raw material, an outlet pipe for gas generated by the fermentation, a constant level overflow pipe and a discharge pipe for residual sludge. The digester comprises a vertical, cylindrical vessel with a downwardly convergent conical base supported clear of the ground. The vessel is contained within a thermally insulating cover which extends down to the ground. The infeed, gas outlet, overflow, and sludge discharge pipes all pass through the space between cover and vessel to extend into/through the fermenting material in the vessel. The overflow pipe is pref. an inverted 'U'-tube of which one branch discharges outside the insulating cover. The other branch passes through the conical base to connect with a pipe communicating with the interior of the vessel, e.g. with the infeed pipe. The top of the inverted 'U'-tube is pref. vented to atmos. to prevent siphoning. The digester is used for the anaerobic fermentation of liquefied manure etc. to produce methane gas for heating, light and power. The digester vessel is held clear of the ground to prevent loss of heat. The various service pipes are buried in the fermenting mass and pass through the base space inside the cover; this protects the pipes from frost damage.
