Abstract

Metal components are coated prior to assembly by brazing with a mixt. of (a) a powdered mineral salt flux capable of dissolving metal oxides and (b) a powdered acrylic resin. The powder is applied by electrostatic powder coating techniques. Pref. acrylic resin is a poly alkyl(meth)acrylate, and esp. polybutylmethacrylate. Pref. flux compsn. comprises 75 % boric acid, 20 % borax and 5 % polybutylmethacrylate; or 71 % boric acid, 18 % borax and 11 % polybutyl methacrylate. The powders are applied e.g. by electrostatic unit or by electrostatic gun fed by compressed air. The flux compsn. has good adhesion to the metal and gives improved brazed joints.

Description

The present invention relates to a method of coating metal parts prior to their assembly by brazing, by means of a flux comprising an inorganic salt capable of dissolving metal oxides and being in pulverulent form, for example a metal halide or an oxygenated compound boron.

The assembly by brazing technique uses flux strippers whose role is to dissolve the oxides formed on the surface of the parts to be assembled and thus allow the good realization of the solder joint.

Various methods of coating parts by means of a flux, or fluxing methods 9 are currently known.

These processes include those which use a stripping composition such as that known from French patent application no. 78.16.185, in the form of a paste or a slip allowing the parts to be coated either by coating , either by spraying with an aerosol can, or by immersion. The use of these pastes or slurries has many drawbacks: they degrade quickly, create significant pollution and they require frequent cleaning of the equipment.

Furthermore, electrostatic powdering techniques are known which are used for coating certain objects with a layer of plastic material. However, the active mineral salts usually used in fluxes have dielectric properties which are incompatible with the electrostatic powdering technique. In addition, the yields obtained with these techniques, that is to say the ratio of the weight of powder used to the weight of powder deposited, is very low and the adhesion of this powder is extremely poor.

The object of the invention is to allow a coating having satisfactory adhesion to the parts to be brazed, which can be produced with good yield and avoiding the disadvantages inherent in doughs or slurries, and it proposes for this purpose a method which consists in mixing , with the aforementioned powdery mineral salt, an acrylic resin also in powder form and applying the mixture obtained to the parts to be brazed by electrostatic powdering.

The invention therefore makes it possible to carry out dry fluxing of the parts to be brazed.

The acrylic resin is used, in the present invention, because of its dielectric properties which make it suitable for electrostatic powdering and because of its compatibility with the requirements of soldering.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the aforementioned resin consists of a methacrylate or an alkyl polymethacrylate.

These resins provide high yields and very good adhesion to the parts to be brazed.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the dusting is carried out by spraying the pulverulent mixture by means of an electro-static gun with compressed air supply.

Various pulverulent compositions have been used in which the mineral salts consist of oxygenated boron compounds such as boric acid and / or a borate and in which the acrylic resins consist of a polymetacrylate such as polymethyl butyl acrylate.

Two specific examples of pulverulent flows used for implementing the method according to the invention will be given below.
EXAMPLE 1
The mineral salts or active elements used are boric acid and sodium pyroborate (borax) and the acrylic resin is a butyl polymethacrylate in the following proportions by weight
- 75% boric acid
- borax 20%
- 5% polymethyl butylacrylate
EXAMPLE 2
The mineral salts and the resin are the same as in Example 1 but with the following proportions
- boric acid 71%
- borax 18%
- 11 ss polymethyl butyl acrylate
This latter flow can be used more particularly for complicated parts comprising for example deep grooves or seals and requiring a flow with high penetration.

These fluxes can be applied either using a conventional type electrostatic gun in which the powder entrained by means of compressed air passes over an electrode brought to high voltage (of the order of 80,000 volts) or to the using entirely static industrial installations, such as those known under the trade name "BRENNLAGE" which comprise a container provided with electrodes for electrically charging the powder, the latter being attracted by electrostatic effect on the parts to be covered.

The invention applies, in general, to the fluxing of the parts to be brazed, that is to say to their covering by means of a flux flux and more particularly to the fluxing of parts having to undergo an oxybrasing by means automatic installations, these parts can be made of ferrous or copper metals or aluminum alloys.

Numerous variants can be brought to the process described without departing from the scope of the invention, this is how it is possible, for example, to use aluminum chlorides or fluorides as inorganic salts, this in the case of brazing or of oxy-brazing of alloy based on copper or aluminum.
