Abstract

The speed detector electromagnetically senses the movement of an apertured metal ring past a pickup coil. The metal ring is normally a part of the wheel, but this may be replaced by a profiled ring attached to the circumference of the wheel. The ring then has a U-section with one arm of the U being welded to the outer surface of the wheel. The base of the U lies in the plane of the wheel and the second arm forms the detected surface. This surface has a flared edge and also has a series of holes at regular intervals around the circumference. The detector is directed along a line perpendicular to the tangent of this surface. In an alternative arrangement the ring has an L-section, and has one limb of the L welded or screwed to one face of the wheel.
