Abstract

The paste comprises a vehicle in which is dispersed a dental abrasive which is wholly or partly charcoal. The amt. of charcoal in the compsn. is pref. 5-70%, pref. as a powder of 5-10 micron particle size. It is pref. combined with at least one other abrasive from natural CaCO3, pptd. CaCO3, alpha alumina trihydrate, amorphous silica, kaolins and talc. Besides having a satisfactory abrasive action, the charcoal has an absorbing and purifying effect particularly for colorants such as nicotine stains and for bacteria.

Description

 The present invention relates to a novel toothpaste comprising a vehicle and, dispersed therein, a dental abrasive.

 More precisely, this dental abrasive is constituted in part or in part by charcoal. The latter is particularly advantageous compared to abrasives used in known toothpastes of this type.

Indeed, the charcoal firstly has a hardness sufficient to allow cleaning teeth by scraping and polishing, but still low enough to avoid any risk of scratching the mail. But this mechanical cleaning action is also associated with a purifying action due to the adsorbent power of the charcoal purifying action that do not have the dental abrasives known and mentioned above. This purifying action of charcoal is reflected in particular by the adsorption of any coloring agent of tooth enamel such as nicotine, for example, and any germ and bacteria.

 The charcoal content in the toothpaste may be between 5 and 70% by weight. Indeed below 5%, the mechanical action is no longer sufficient and above 70%, the toothpaste becomes too viscous to be used commercially.

 Advantageously, the charcoal is used in the form of powder, the particle size of which is chosen so as to obtain at the same time a paste as homogeneous as possible and an optimal abrasive and purifying action. This particle size will preferably be between 5 and 10 microns.

 The charcoal may also be combined in the paste, with at least one other dental abrasive chosen from the group comprising natural calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate, alumina, trihydrate, amorphous silica and kaolin. and talc; the total amount of dental abrasives in the dough, however, can not exceed 70%.

 The vehicle of the toothpaste may consist of water, and / or at least one humectant such as glycerin and sorbitol in aqueous solution.

 In its simplest definition, the toothpaste according to the invention may therefore consist of charcoal and water as a vehicle. The addition of humectants is, however, desired for the improvement of the dough from the technical point of view and its commercial presentation, the most frequently used humectants being glycerin or sorbitol in aqueous solution.

 The toothpaste according to the invention may also contain a water retention agent. Its content is chosen as a function of the viscosity that it confers on the dough, but it is preferably between 0.2 and 10% by weight of the dough. As retention agent, mention may be made, inter alia, of the glycerol and sorbitol mentioned above and also playing the humectant roll, or carboxymethylcellulose, carboxyethylcellulose and methylhydroxypropylcellulose. or organic binders of natural or synthetic origin of the colloidal type such as alginates of alkaline minds, preferably sodium, or alkaline earth metals, preferably calcium, alginic acids and sodium carrageenates.

 Depending on the desired viscosity, 0.2 to 10% of a thickener is introduced into the paste which may be chosen from the compounds mentioned above and used as a water retention agent. This thickening agent may also consist of precipitated silica whose content in the dough may vary from 5 to 50% by weight.

 Various other substances can be incorporated into the oral preparations according to the invention. These include cleaning agents, preferably chosen for their surface-active properties which promote complete dispersion of the paste in the oral cavity and for their foaming properties, sodium lauryl sulphate and its derivatives being particularly suitable. They are also flavoring agents such as mint or licorice. Finally, they are preservatives such as formalin. The cleaning agents may be present in the toothpaste in a proportion of up to 5% by weight, and the flavoring and preserving agents may be preferably up to 5%.

 The procedure used for the manufacture of toothpastes according to the invention will be given below.

The water retention agent is first dissolved in water. In the solution obtained, powdered charcoal is intimately dispersed, preferably in a vacuum mixer to avoid any inclusion of air bubbles. All these operations can be done cold, the dissolution of the water retention agent can however be accelerated by heating. Then, if desired, a complementary dental abrasive is added, followed by a cleaning agent, a flavoring agent and / or a preservative. Always if desired, we can add a humectant, this addition can be done either before that of cleaning agents, flavoring and / or preservation, or at the end of preparation.

 The charcoal used will be obtained by carbonization, in a closed vessel and / or in a continuous furnace in an inert atmosphere, of wood of trees (with leaves or conifers), with a preference for beech wood and of charm.

 The toothpastes according to the invention obtained by carrying out the above procedure and of which we will find hereinafter by way of examples some compositions, pose no aesthetic problem likely to affect their marketing, coal of wood is indeed completely eliminated by rinsing the mouth and without staining of teeth, gums or any internal part of the mouth.

Claims (9)

 1. A toothpaste comprising a vehicle and, dispersed therein, a dental abrasive, characterized in that the latter is constituted in whole or in part by charcoal.  2. The toothpaste according to claim 1, characterized in that the charcoal content in the dough is between 5 and 70% by weight.  3. Toothpaste according to any one of claims 1 and 2, characterized in that the charcoal is in the form of powder.  4. The toothpaste according to claim 3, characterized in that the charcoal powder has a particle size of preferably between 5 and 10 xi.  The toothpaste as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the charcoal is combined with at least one other dental abrasive selected from the group consisting of: natural calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate, alumina3 (-trihydrate, amorphous silica, kaolin and talc.  6. The toothpaste as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the vehicle consists of water and / or a humectant.  The toothpaste as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the vehicle further contains a water retention agent.  Toothpaste according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the vehicle also contains a thickening agent.  9. Toothpaste according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that it contains at least one element selected from the group comprising: cleaning agent, flavoring agent, preservative.
