Abstract

A number of photocells (P) is encapsulated in silicon resin or similar material, and inserted between two half shells which together make up the shape of a conventional roof tile. The shells are made of transparent material so that the substitute tile serves the dual purposes of providing cover, and generating electricity. At the top edge of the tile are two connection terminals made of stainless steel having a coefficient of expansion matched to that of the tile itself. A colouring is included in the shell to allow through only the components of the sun's rays to which the photocells are sensitive. Diodes are included in the structure to protect the cells and to facilitate the connection of supply cables. Several cells connected together may generate up to 60 watts per square metre.
