Abstract

A method of controlling precisely the lengthening of a pipeline according to the desired line during its laying on the sea-bed in deep water comprises curving and guiding the pipelines near the sea bed by a submerged piloting structure. The pipeline descends from the surface to this structure practically vertically or at very small angle to the vertical, and the structure remains some tens of metres from the sea bed all along the laying of the pipeline. A method of abandoning the pipeline e.g. when meteorological conditions worsen consists of laying the submerged structure on the sea bed weighted by heavy masses, the vertical branch being conserved, its end being closed by a lifting head. A float fixed on the pipeline ensures an ascending traction on the vertical part of the pipeline. The process improves the process described in the principal patent 7902256 of 30.1.79, in that the pipeline descends vertically from the ship to the submerged structure, the submerged structure is directly supported by the ship in which the pipeline elements are assembled and the pipeline is not lightened by additional floats.
