Abstract

The two tong arms include a male and female profile contg. a pivot shaft; and both arms are made of a thermosetting plastic reinforced with glass fibres. The end of one arm is fitted with a contact pad permitting the passage of current above 500 amps and connected to a cable. The end of the other tong arm is fitted with a steel pad; and tha the arms are spring-loaded so a workpiece can be securely clapmed between the two pads. Conventional tong arms are made of steel or Cu alloys; and the use of plastic arms reduces the cost of the tongs by more than 50% as compared with tongs using arms made of a Cu alloy.
