Abstract

A semitransparent pattern or image is obtd. by the successive coating of a glass substrate with two thin films (3,4). Film (4) is then selectively covered by a mask, which is a varnish applied via a half-tone printing screen obtd. from a photographic image; and the mask is used during the deposition of a third thin film (6). The decoration consists esp. of a photographic image applied to spectacle lenses. The varnish is pref. of a polyester type, esp. a cellulose varnish, which is dissolved after deposition of the third film (6), esp. in a bath of acetone. Layers (4,6) are pref. SiO, where layer (4) produces a dark colour, e.g. blue, but layer (6) produces a light colour, e.g. yellow, both via interference. Photographic images in various colours can be obtd.
