Abstract

The orientation of directional assemblies such as antennas or solar panels on satellites is performed by a pivoting magnetic suspension system. This obviates the difficulties experienced when using ball bearing assemblies since space conditions create lubrication difficulties. A solar panel (16) is firmly attached to the shaft (3) or rotor which rotates about an axis (X-X') within a stator (2) attached to the Two pairs of high energy magnetic crown wheels (6-7) are located towards the ends of the support. These are located between thin ferromagnetic rings (8-11) to produce magnetic fields to maintain the rotor central within the stator. An electronic control circuit (19) connected to windings (17,18) controls the centering from a speed sensor comprising toroidal magnets (21,22) and windings (23,24). The centering motor is connected to an angular position sensor comprising photodiodes (32-35) operating via a controller (28).
