Abstract

A seal ring for a joint between two tube ends is accommodated in a semicircular inner groove of the socket end of a tube and seals against the spigot at the other end. The seal ring consists of a major part of semicircular cross-section which is made of a harder elastomer (at least 80 Shore) and has a smooth outer surface in engagement with the groove. It is made in one piece with a sector-shaped elastomer part at one half of its dia. which consists of a softer elastomer (40 or 50 Shore). Before the joint is made, the soft part is flush with the tube wall and the harder part protrudes. Insertion of the spigot end causes it to turn so that the soft part produces a good seal. Such a seal does not become damaged by the insertion of the spigot end and ensures a reliable sealing action.
