Abstract

A skimmer for use in a decantation vessel comprises a cylindrical tube which has a lot along its length, bounded by first and second parallel lips. the tube is oriented so that the first lip is level with the surface of the upper liq. phase. the angle at the centre corresp. to the slot is such that when the first lip is level with that surface, the second lip is above it. The tube is fitted at ites ends with means which allow it to turn freely about its axis between two fixed positions and ita has a partition along its length dividing it into an upper chamber and a lower chamber. The upper chamber is closed at the ends of the tube. The lower chamber is connected at its ends to pipes for discharging the recovered liq. layer. The edges of the partition are formed by two generating lines of the tube. One is formed by the first lip of the slot. The othe is situated below the surface of the liq. phase. the partition thus forms in the first chamber a channel capable of receiving the recovered liq. phase. The tube is fitted with a counterweight placed so that it can counter-balance the wt. of liq. received by the channel. The first channle communicates with the second chamber by a calibrated orifice made in the partition. The invention eliminates inconveniences of existing skimmers which can be oriented only by an operator, and which can be drowned and recover water as well as oil or can emerge so that oil accumulates on the surface and becomes oxidised forming a compact layer difficult to remove. The skimmer according to the invention is self-positioning and requires little human intervention.
