Abstract

Methanol and ethylene glycol are recovered from residues of prodn. of polyethylene glycol terephthalate and its intermediates by heating, pref. at 120-300 (150-290), mixt. of (A) residues from the Katzschmann process for prodn. of dimethyl terephthalate by simultaneous oxidn. of p-xylene and methyl p-toluate in liq. phase with air, and esterification of the acids obtd. with methanol, and (B) residues contg. condensed -OCH2CH2O- gps. from polycondensn. of ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid and/or dimethyl terephthalate, from which the excess glycol and volatile components have been removed. The volatile prods. are driven off from the mixt. and fractionated. Useful raw materials are recovered from waste prods., leaving a residue which is easily transported at over 200 degrees C. The process may be operated continuously.
