Abstract

A fermentation plant and a process for the culture of micro-organisms on a fermentable substrate of particulate solids. The plant comprises an open-topped, vertical cylindrical vessel which is rotatable about its vertical axis. A diffuser is provided in the base of the vessel through which a gas, e.g. compressed air, can be injected into a fluid being processed in the vessel. A motorised rotary agitator is provided to mix the contents of the vessel. Mushrooms and yeasts can be grown in starch pulp, dried potatoes, cassava pulp, cereals, etc. Controlled growth of mushrooms etc. can be carried out on an industrial scale.
