Abstract

The boom (8) is for removing, e.g. an oil film (15) from the sea surface and is towed behind a tug. It includes a magnetic cylinder (12) running the length of the boom and open to receive the films. The cylinder (12) contains an electric conductor (11) through which a current is passed to generate a magnetic field. The film, over which a magnetic powder such as Fe3O4, preferably with a binder, has previously been sprayed is attracted by the field into the cylinder. The cylinder (12) carries adjacent its opening upper and lower toothed rails (17) running along the boom length and along which a suction pipe mouth can be run to suck up the oil accumulated in the cylinder (12). A resistive sensor may be included in the mouth to ensure that oil and not seawater is predominantly sucked up.
