Abstract

The generator has a cylinder, which can be held via releasable pins at various heights within a bore in the ground. A second cylinder, contg. two vertically spaced electrical coils (14, 15) can be pressed against the upper end of the first cylinder (4), with a high intensity pulse current alternately supplied to both coils. This causes magnetic recoil at opposite ends of the second cylinder with the axial movement of the two cylinders being monitored. Pref. both coils are wound on an insulating core, each of which can slide within the second cylinder and which are resiliently pressed against the opposite ends of this cylinder. The control unit (24) for supplying the currents to the two coils pref. uses capacitive discharge (20, 23).
