Abstract

The video disc player has a carriage executing a translational movement according to the radial movement of the track-following stylus during replay. One end of the stylus arm is flexibly linked to the carriage in such a way that the needle projects through a hole in the carriage when the arm is lowered for replay. The stylus arm has a permanent magnet in the region of its stylus carrying end. Two spaced coils with non-magnetic cores generate a homogeneous magnetic field between them when excited. The coils are mounted on the carriage with the permanent magnet between them. The coils are excited selectively in order to displace the needle radially.
