Abstract

Annular seal is made of two annular profiles which overlap radially with an oblique interface and which are made of material having a low degree of elasticity and compressibility. The oblique faces allow the two profiles to slide in response to compression of the seal in a supporting channel until contact is firm on the interface and the external faces of the seal simultaneously. Seal is suitable for sliding joints, e.g. between a rotary shaft and a cylindrical bearing, or for static joints, for pneumatic, hydraulic or mechanical systems, esp. for sealing utterfly valves, allowing large bore valves to be made tight against pressures which would extrude an annular joint of a highly flexible or compressible material. Seal components are esp. of stainless steel or PTFE.
