Abstract

Prodn. of a polyurethane comprises reacting an organic polyisocyanate with an organic polyester polyol or polyester polyol in the presence of a catalytic amt. of N-(dimethylaminopropyl) methacrylamide. A pref. process for flexible polyether polyurethane foam prodn. comprises reacting in the presence of a blowing agent and the catalyst, an organic polyisocyanate with a polyether polyol in amts to provide 0.4-1.5 mol. equiv. isocyanate gps. per mol. equiv. hydroxyl gps. the polyether polyol having a mol.wt. of 2000-7000 and being formed by the addn. of a polyhydric alcohol of functionality 2-4 with a 2-4C alkylene oxide. Also claimed is prodn. of a flexible polyester polyurethane foam by reacting, in the presence of a blowing agent and catalyst, toluene diisocyanate with a hydroxyl terminated condensn. prod. of a polycarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, in amts. to provide 1.0-1.5 mol. equivs. isocyanate gps. per mol. equiv. hydroxyl gps., the condensn. prod. having a functionality of 2-4, mol.wt. 2000-6000 and a hydroxyl number 25-60. Catalyst is suitable for prodn. of rigid or flexible foams. There is no excessive pinking and no shrinkage of the foam. No co-catalyst is required. The catalytic cpd. has low volatility and little or no odour. There is sufficient delay in the foaming operation to aid in processing. Good foams are produced with desirable tack-free times.
