Abstract
The key operates a lathe chuck. It is designed to disengage when released by the user and ensures its removal before the machine is started. The tool comprises a tommy bar (3, 2) of which the shaft (2) has a hexagon key tip (8) and slides in a sleeve (1). A closed diametric slot (9) on a section of the shaft axis locates two coil springs (4) which hold the shaft fully retracted with the tip withdrawn. Relative displacement of the shaft and sleeve against the action of the coil spring is necessary to effect the emergence and utilisation of the top. The recoil effect gives automatic disengagement. The springs (4) straddle the shaft axis, and extend between diametric bars (6, 7) fixed to the shaft and sleeve.
