Abstract

The static inverter converts d c from a battery supply into a.c. to power a fluorescent tube. The frequency of oscillation is inaudible and provides a means of lighting railway carriages. This is obtained by tuning the primary o/a transformer. A battery supply is connected to the centre tap on the transformer (5) primary winding (4). A zener diode (21) stabilises the voltage while a capacitor (19) and inductor (18) provide filtering. A capacitor (22) tunes the primary winding which is coupled via an inductor (23) to the collector of a transistor (24). The base is coupled magnetically via a feedback inductor (25) to the principal transformer (5). An inductor (32) coupled magnetically to the collector inductor (23) comprises a recovery transformer (33) to improve conversion efficiency. The fluorescent tubes are connected to the transformer secondary windings.
