Abstract

A water-cooled nuclear reactor, comprising an enclosure with a lower floor contg. a vessel with a base enclosing the reactor core with its fuel assemblages, concrete structures within the enclosure including a cylindrical vertical central shaft resting on the floor and supporting the vessel at its upper end and communicating compartments holding borated water, comprises in addn. a compact assemblage resting on the floor within the cylindrical shaft and below the bottom of the vessel. This assemblage is realised in a material pref. refractory blocks of e.g. basalt, or lead, which does not produce explosive reactions with the melted material coming from the fuel assemblages and the structures they pass through in case of accident. The structure is traversed by parallel tubes, pref. at 20 degrees to the horizontal, opening at their ends into the communicating compartments contg. borated water. The installation can withstand an accidental fusion of the vessel with discharge of melted uranium oxide without there following a process capable of inducing destruction of the enclosure and partic. of the floor.
