Abstract
Utilising a ball-mounted screw traversing a fixed threaded shaft, the self-propelled screw jack is designed to move relatively heavy loads, the drive being transmitted from a motor output shaft by a worm and wheel mechanism. The motor, the transmission and the screw are incorporated in an integrated moving assembly, the wheel housing the screw in a fixed co-axial relationship, and the shaft being fixed between two terminal points. Roller bearing assemblies may be located at each end of the screw to provide for its axial guidage along the shaft, their internal dia. being nominally greater than the pitch of the shaft thread. An application may be the support of a retractable T.V. receiver with an ascent rate exceeding that of descent, and the shaft may be pre-tensioned to reduce the likelihood of buckling.
