Abstract

One or more detectors can be included in one arm of a wheatstone bridge and any unbalance can then be used to signal an alarm for safety or monitoring purposes, the detector is continuously and automatically checked for correct operation. The detectors have a total resistance (hx) which is equal to resistors (R3, R4) in another arm of a wheatstone bridge. An adjustable resistor (R4) enables the balance to be precisely set. Bridge unbalance causes a voltage to appear at the inputs (2, 3) of an operational amplifier (IC2) and its output passes via other circuits (IC3, IC4) to illuminate a diode (LED1) and operate a relay (REL1) for a larm circuit. The circuit is tested by short negative pulses from a circuit (1C1) which cuts bridge power supply to cause unbalance due to a time constant in one arm (R3, R4, C2). This causes a second diode (LED2) to illuminate.
