Abstract

Particle sizes are measured by scattering light from a beam to impinge on a detector. The detector output is fed to a set of threshold devices each responsive to a predetermined pulse amplitude. Indicators are driven by counters fed from the output of these threshold devices. The instrument is periodically recalibrated by placing a rod in the light beam to simulate a particle of knwon size. The detector output during this calibration operation is fed to the threshold circuits to serve as the decision threshold. The instrument measures particles sizes in air to monitor air pollution in shops. The instrument is continuously self-calibrating.
